Alonzo S. Upham
Alonzo Sidney Upham (June 9, 1811 Hamilton, Madison County, New York – August 12, 1882 Baldwinsville, Onondaga County, New York) was an American manufacturer and politician from New York. Life He was the son of Joshua Upham (1767–1855) and Lydia (Chamberlain) Upham (1771–1860). He was a carriage-maker, and later a manufacturer of railroad cars, in LeRoy, Genesee County, New York. On April 17, 1836, he married Mary Munro (1808–1864), and they had six children who all died in infancy. He was a member of the New York State Assembly (Genesee Co., 2nd D.) in 1847 and 1848. He was a member of the New York State Senate (28th D.) from 1850 to 1853, and from 1856 to 1857, sitting in the 73rd, 74th, 75th, 76th, 79th and 80th New York State Legislatures. Hamilton (town), New York
Hamilton is a town in Madison County, New York, United States. The population was 6,690 at the 2010 census. The town is named after American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. The Town of Hamilton contains a village also named Hamilton, the site of Colgate University. The village is on the county's border. History The location was formerly called Payne's Corners. The Town of Hamilton was established in 1795, before the county was formed, from the Town of Paris in Oneida County. The original town was reduced to create new towns in the county. Geography The southern town line is the border of Chenango County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 41.4 square miles (107.3 km), of which 41.4 square miles (107.1 km) is land and 0.1 square mile (0.2 km) (0.19%) is water. New York State Agricultural Society
The New York State Agricultural Society was founded in 1832, with the goal of promoting agricultural improvement. One of its main activities is operating the annual New York State Fair. Activities A major activity of the society is running the annual New York State Fair. The first such fair was held in 1841, in Syracuse, and drew 10,000 attendees over two days. The second was held in Albany, with Auburn, Buffalo, Elmira, New York City, Poughkeepsie, Rochester, Saratoga Springs, Watertown and Utica all hosting fairs between 1842 and 1889. The fair moved permanently back to Syracuse in 1890. The society publishes a newspaper titled ''The Cultivator''. Originally a monthly publication, it is semi-annual.
