Alonzo Philetus Carpenter
Alonzo Philetus Carpenter (January 22, 1829 – May 21, 1898) was an associate justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court from 1881 to 1896, and was chief justice of that court from 1896 to 1898. Early life, education, and career Born in Waterford, Vermont, Carpenter attended St. Johnsbury Academy, entered Williams College in 1845 and graduated in 1849.Clark Bell, ed., ''The Medico-legal Journal'', Vol. 18 (1900), Supplement, p. 82-83."Judge Alonzo P. New Hampshire Supreme Court
The New Hampshire Supreme Court is the supreme court of the U. S. state of New Hampshire and sole appellate court of the state. The Supreme Court is seated in the state capital, Concord. The Court is composed of a Chief Justice and four Associate Justices appointed by the Governor and Executive Council to serve during "good behavior" until retirement or the age of seventy. The senior member of the Court is able to specially assign lower-court judges, as well as retired justices, to fill vacancies on the Court. The Supreme Court is the administrative authority over the state's judicial system. The Court has both mandatory and discretionary appellate jurisdiction. Lewis Whitehouse Clark (August 19, 1828 – May 28, 1900) was a justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court from 1877 to 1898, serving as chief justice in 1898.
