Alonzo Church (college President)
Alonzo Church (April 9, 1793 – May 18, 1862) was the sixth president of the University of Georgia (UGA). He served in that capacity from 1829 until his resignation in 1859. Church was born on April 9, 1793, in Brattleboro, Vermont. He was an 1816 graduate of Middlebury College. He initially joined the UGA faculty as a Professor of Mathematics and served in that capacity for ten years before assuming the presidency. Although Church served longer than any president of the University, there were numerous clashes with student and faculty during his tenure which resulted in declines in enrollment and faculty upheaval. In 1824, in appreciation of the enormous service rendered to this country by the Marquis de Lafayette during the Revolutionary War, Congress voted to grant him a full township in the Florida Territory. This tract was called the Lafayette Land Grant and encompassed over 23,000 acres. While the Marquis never came to visit his property, he designated an agent to sell parcels of it on his behalf. The 2,400 acres upon which Goodwood Plantation was sited was purchased by Hardy Croom from the Lafayette Grant in 1834. Goodwood Plantation (also known as Old Croom Mansion) was a medium-sized cotton plantation of about 1,675 acres (7 km2) in central Leon County, Florida, established by Hardy Bryan Croom. It is located at 1600 Miccosukee Road. The plantation was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on June 30, 1972. Comptroller Of The State Of Florida
The Florida Comptroller was the state comptroller of Florida from 1845 to 2003 (when the position was merged with the position of Florida State Treasurer/Insurance Commissioner/Fire Marshal to create the post of Chief Financial Officer of Florida following amendments to the State Constitution). The Comptroller was a member of the Florida Cabinet and was elected by the Florida Legislature until 1865, when it became an elected office. The Comptroller was Florida's chief fiscal officer. The post was created in the 1838 Constitution and the first Comptroller took office in 1845 and assumed the duties of the Auditor of Public Accounts of Florida Territory. Alonzo Church Croom
Alonzo Church Croom (December 1, 1845 – February 7, 1912) was an American politician who served as Comptroller of Florida from 1901 until 1912. His father, George Alexander Croom, owned the Casa de Laga Plantation in Tallahassee, and his mother was the daughter of University of Georgia president Alonzo Church for whom he was named. He was born near Quincy, Florida. Hardy Bryan Croom was his older brother. He married Maria Bond on April 26, 1870. They had children. He died February 7, 1912, in Ocala, Florida Ocala ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Marion County within the northern region of Florida, United States.
