Alonso García Tamés
Alonso García-Tamés (born January 21, 1959) is the former CEO of the National Bank of Public Works and Services (Banobras) and General Director of Operations of the Central Bank of Mexico. Education and career García-Tamés graduated with a bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science from the Universidad Anahuac. In December 2006 García-Tamés was appointed CEO of the National Bank of Public Works and Services, development bank dedicated to promote infrastructure investment in Mexico through sub-national government lending, project finance, and technical assistance. García-Tamés speaks at conferences related to debt management policy, monetary policy, exchange rate management policy, payment systems and international asset management. Banobras
Banco Nacional de Obras y Servicios Públicos, SNC (National Works and Public Services Bank) or Banobras is a state owned development bank in Mexico. Its core business is sub national (Municipal and State governments) and project finance. It was founded in 1933 as Banco Nacional Hipotecario Urbano y de Obras Públicas, S.A (National Urban Mortgage and Public Works Bank) by president Abelardo L. Rodríguez. Until the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, its headquarters were located at the Torre Insignia, a pyramid-shaped building designed by one of Mexico's most noted architects, Mario Pani. As of December 2005, the bank has a loan portfolio of more than US$10 billion and a tier 1 capital of more than a 1 billion. History Background Plans for a national bank of Mexico began as early as the Mexican Empire of Agustín de Iturbide with his idea of a ''Gran Banco del Imperio Mexicano'' (Grand Bank of the Mexican Empire). This idea was never pursued, instead, credit was generally issued by religious orders or trading guilds. In 1827 Mexico defaulted on a loan from British lenders which made it difficult to find foreign capital and it was forced to rely on local lenders as it had no national bank to lend to it.
