Frederick Haldimand
Sir Frederick Haldimand, KB (11 August 1718 – 5 June 1791) was a military officer best known for his service in the British Army in North America during the Seven Years' War and the American Revolutionary War. From 1778 to 1786, he served as Governor of the Province of Quebec, during which time he oversaw military operations against the northern frontiers in the war, and engaged in ultimately fruitless negotiations to establish the independent Vermont Republic as a new British province. His administration of Quebec was at times harsh, with the detention of numerous political dissidents and agitators. Early life Haldimand was born in Yverdon, Switzerland. Haldimand County
Haldimand County is a rural city-status single-tier municipality on the Niagara Peninsula in Southern Ontario, Canada, on the north shore of Lake Erie, and on the Grand River. Despite its name, it is no longer a county by definition, as all municipal services are handled by a single level of government. Municipal offices are located in Cayuga. The county is adjacent to Norfolk County, the County of Brant, the City of Hamilton, and the Regional Municipality of Niagara. History Haldimand's history has been closely associated with that of neighbouring Norfolk County. Upper Canada was created in 1791 by being separated from the old Province of Quebec, Haldimand was created in 1798 as part of the Niagara District. The Township of Alnwick/Haldimand is a township in central Ontario, Canada, in Northumberland County, situated between Lake Ontario and Rice Lake. It was formed in 2001 by the merger of Alnwick Township in the north and Haldimand Township in the south. Alderville First Nation is an autonomously governed First Nation contained within the township boundaries, in two non-contiguous sections along County Roads 45 and 18. History Alnwick Township Alnwick Township was originally surveyed in 1795 when twenty-four lots were laid out on the first concession. It was named for Alnwick in Northumberland, England. The first crown grants were issued in 1798 and other surveys would follow in subsequent years. Haldimand House
Haldimand House is an historic building in Caledonia, Ontario that is one of the oldest in the town. Originally built as a stagecoach inn, Haldimand House has served as a hotel and bar, a boarding house, apartments and then a series of small retail establishments Early years In 1836, Ranald McKinnon. started construction of a stagecoach inn that he would call Haldimand House. He named it after Sir Frederick Haldimand, Governor of Upper Canada. Shortly after beginning construction,, Little received his Crown patents and was legally given possession of the land he was developing. Haldimand House was built three stories high using squared timbers cut at Little's saw mill in Seneca, Ontario. Haldimand County Museum & Archives
The Haldimand County Museum & Archives, located at 8 Echo Street in Cayuga, Ontario, Canada, is a museum that preserves and makes accessible evidence of the history of Haldimand County. Artifacts related to Haldimand County are restored and displayed in the museum galleries and grounds. The current curator is Karen Richardson. Buildings, Facilities, and Exhibits The museum houses two galleries; one exhibits Victorian parlour "customs and culture," "the busy routine of a pioneer kitchen," and the "tools of a 19th Century blacksmith's shop", while the second holds temporary exhibits . The Dufferin And Haldimand Rifles Of Canada
The Dufferin and Haldimand Rifles of Canada was an infantry regiment of the Non-Permanent Active Militia of the Canadian Militia and later the Canadian Army. The regiment was formed in 1936, when The Haldimand Rifles was Amalgamated with The Dufferin Rifles of Canada. In 1946, the regiment was converted from Infantry to Artillery and now forms part of the 56th Field Artillery Regiment, RCA. Haldimand was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly of the Parliament of the Province of Canada, in Canada West. It was based on Haldimand County. The electoral district was created in 1841, upon the establishment of the Province of Canada by the union of Upper Canada and Lower Canada. Haldimand was represented by one member in the Legislative Assembly. It was abolished in 1867, upon the creation of Canada and the province of Ontario.
