The second season of the American Horror (genre), horror Anthology series, anthology television series ''American Horror Story'', subtitled ''Asylum'', takes place in 1964 and follows the stories of the staff and inmates who occupy the fictional mental institution Briarcliff Manor, and intercuts with events in the past and present. The ensemble cast includes Zachary Quinto, Joseph Fiennes, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Lily Rabe, Lizzie Brocheré, James Cromwell, and Jessica Lange, with all returning from the first season, except Fiennes, Brocheré, and Cromwell. Zachary John Quinto (; born June 2, 1977) is an American actor and film producer. He is known for his roles as Sylar, the primary antagonist from the science fiction drama series ''Heroes (American TV series), Heroes'' (2006–2010); Spock in the film ''Star Trek (film), Star Trek'' (2009) and its sequels ''Star Trek Into Darkness'' (2013) and ''Star Trek Beyond'' (2016); Charlie Manx in the AMC (TV channel), AMC series NOS4A2 (TV series), ''NOS4A2'', and Dr. Oliver Thredson in ''American Horror Story: Asylum,'' for which he received a nomination for an Primetime Emmy Awards, Emmy award.
