Alma Matters
"Alma Matters" is a song by Morrissey, released as a single in July 1997. It was the first single to be taken from the ''Maladjusted'' album and was released one week before the album. The single reached number 16 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Morrissey's first top 20 hit since " The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get" in 1994. The song was also notable for seeing Morrissey reference the film ''A Taste of Honey'' for the first time since his early days in The Smiths in the line "it's my life to ruin my own way". The song title is a pun on '' Alma mater''. Steven Patrick Morrissey (; born 22 May 1959), known professionally as Morrissey, is an English singer and songwriter. He came to prominence as the frontman and lyricist of rock band the Smiths, who were active from 1982 to 1987. Since then, he has pursued a successful solo career. Morrissey's music is characterised by his baritone voice and distinctive lyrics with recurring themes of emotional isolation, sexual longing, self-deprecating and dark humour, and anti-establishment stances. Born to working-class Irish immigrants in Davyhulme, Lancashire, Morrissey grew up in nearby Manchester. As a child, he developed a love of literature, kitchen sink realism, and 1960s pop music. Joy Division
Joy Division were an English rock band formed in Salford in 1976. The group consisted of vocalist Ian Curtis, guitarist/keyboardist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook and drummer Stephen Morris. Sumner and Hook formed the band after attending a June 1976 Sex Pistols concert. While Joy Division's first recordings were heavily influenced by early punk, they soon developed a sparse sound and style that made them one of the pioneers of the post-punk movement. Their self-released 1978 debut EP ''An Ideal for Living'' drew the attention of the Manchester television personality Tony Wilson, who signed them to his independent label Factory Records. The ARIA Charts are the main Australian music sales charts, issued weekly by the Australian Recording Industry Association.
