Alma Carroll
Alma Carroll (January 11, 1924 – May 3, 2019) was an American actress who was named Miss America of National Defense at the age of 17. Early years Carroll was born in Los Angeles, California on January 11, 1924, as the daughter of Mrs. Ernest A. Stevens. Her first appearance in film was a role in an Our Gang short in 1927, when she was 3 years old. She attended University High School and worked as a photographer's model. She planned to be a teacher or a medical doctor until her entry in a beauty contest changed the direction of her career. Career When she was 18, Carroll signed with Columbia Studios. Her first film was '' Submarine Raider'', which was followed by ''Parachute Nurse''. She also appeared in ''They All Kissed the Bride'', ''Belle of the Yukon, Cinderella Jones,'' and ''Up in Arms.'' Hollywood Victory Caravan
The Hollywood Victory Caravan was a two-week cross-country railroad journey in 1942 that brought together two dozen film stars to raise money for the Army and Navy Relief Society. It was sponsored by the Hollywood Victory Committee of Stage, Screen and Radio. The Caravan show played in 12 cities and netted over $700,000 for Army and Navy relief funds. At the end of World War II, a short film was commissioned from Paramount Pictures by the United States Department of the Treasury, to promote the purchase of Victory Bonds. Some 19 minutes in length, ''Hollywood Victory Caravan'' was released in October 1945 and featured Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, as well as celebrities who were not on the original road trip. William Gaetano Lignante (March 20, 1925 – February 27, 2018), better known as Bill Lignante, was an American artist notable for his varied career as a comic book illustrator, comic strip artist, animator and television courtroom sketch artist. Early life and career Born in Brooklyn, New York in March 1925, Lignante was in the Navy and studied art at Pratt Institute. He first drew ''The Phantom'' when he completed a strip left unfinished after the death of Wilson McCoy in 1961. He then drew the Sunday strip from August, 1961 to May 1962. He did ''The Phantom'' comic book (interior art) for Gold Key Comics, from issue 1–18; continuing the book for King Comics, through issue 28 and he also contributed to Charlton Comics, when they published ''Phantom'' issues 30-74 (although Jim Aparo did most art, as Lignante was in courtrooms by then). ''Up in Arms'' is a 1944 musical film directed by Elliott Nugent and starring Danny Kaye and Dinah Shore. It was nominated for two Academy Awards in 1945. Plot Danny Weems works as an elevator operator in a New York Medical building, so he can be close to doctors and nurses and get free advice on his supposed illnesses.
