Allomerus Decemarticulatus
''Allomerus decemarticulatus'' is an Amazonian ant species found in the tropics of South America. This species is most notable for the workers’ complex and extreme predatory behavior, which involves a symbiosis with both a plant and fungal species. They live in leaf pockets of a host plant species, '' Hirtella physophora''. These leaf pockets are areas inside of the plant between the leaves and the stem. Each colony, which consists of about 1,200 workers, inhabits a single tree; however, the ants are spread among the leaf pockets, with typically 40 workers per pocket. Their diet primarily consists of large insects that are captured on the plant, but they also eat some kinds of food bodies produced by the plant as well as its nectar. They are able to capture their prey, which is much larger than themselves, by constructing a platform that acts as a trap for the unsuspecting prey. The ants hide in the trap and attack when any insect lands on it. This technique is an example ...

Duroia Saccifera
''Duroia'' is a genus of flowering plants in the family Rubiaceae. The genus is found from Costa Rica to tropical South America. Ecology A number of ''Duroia'' species, and possibly all, are capable of biochemical interactions inhibiting the growth of neighbouring plants. Analysis of root extracts from ''Duroia hirsuta'' have yielded a strong plant growth inhibitor plumericin, a tetracyclic iridoid lactone. This process, common amongst plants, is termed allelopathy. In the case of ''Duroia hirsuta'', the chemical inhibitor is aided by the leafcutter ant ''Myrmelachista schumanni'' resident on and in the tree, and playing an active role in suppressing and destroying plant growth in the vicinity of their host by injecting and spraying formic acid. The area around the understory species ''Duroia hirsuta'' is often devoid of all other plant types, leading to the local name 'Devil's garden'. The cost to the host plant for this protection is considerable, since the resident ants subjec ...

Remijia Physophora
''Remijia'' is a genus of flowering plants in the family Rubiaceae. Within the family, it is a member of the subfamily Cinchonoideae and the tribe Cinchoneae. There are about 36 species in ''Remijia''. They are native to Peru and Brazil. Some of the species have hollow stems that harbor ants.David J. Mabberley. 2008. ''Mabberley's Plant-Book'' third edition (2008). Cambridge University Press: UK. The bark of ''Remijia'' contains 0.5%–2% of quinine, a chemical substance often used as a medicinal drug and flavour additive in tonic water. It is cheaper than the bark of ''Cinchona'', another source of quinine. Because of its intense flavor, the bark of ''Remijia'' is used in making tonic water.Henry Hobhouse (2004) ''Šest rostlin, které změnily svět''. Academia, Akademie věd České republiky, Praha, , page 59. in Czech No type species has ever been designated for ''Remijia''. In 2005, two species were transferred from ''Remijia'' to a new genus, ''Ciliosemina''. Species T ...
