Malay Town was the unofficial name for an area of Cairns in Australia. It was built around Alligator Creek by Malay workers in the early 1900s, but by the 1920s was mainly populated by Torres Strait Islanders, with many immigrant communities also represented. History The town itself was surrounded by swamp and mangroves and bordered the city dump. It was described in the following terms: There were, though, some post-World War I German migrants and many living in the town learned multiple languages from their neighbours. Many of the town's Torres Strait Islander inhabitants were members of three large families who had moved to mainland Australia without permission (their movement restricted by the government until 1947). Alligator Creek is a rural locality in the City of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. In the , Alligator Creek had a population of 1,353 people. Geography Alligator Creek is approx south-east of Townsville. The locality is bounded on the north by the Bruce Highway. The North Coast railway line is aligned with part of the northern boundary (but mostly runs just north of the boundary in Nome). As the locality name suggests, Alligator Creek flows through the locality from the south-east ( Mount Elliott) to the north (Nome). The Fitzroy River (Darumbal: ''Toonooba'') is a river located in Central Queensland, Australia. Its catchment covers an area of , making it the largest river catchment flowing to the eastern coast of Australia. It is also the largest river basin that discharges onto the Great Barrier Reef. Course and features Formed by the confluence of the Mackenzie and Dawson rivers that drain the Expedition Range and the Carnarvon Range respectively, the Fitzroy River rises near Duaringa and flows initially north by east, then northward near the Goodedulla National Park. The Wildman River is a river in the Darwin Coastal bioregion of the Northern Territory, Australia.
