Allen Adler
Allen Adler (December 25, 1916 – January 30, 1964) was an American writer, also involved in theater in various ways. With Irving Block he wrote the story for the screenplay for ''Forbidden Planet'', based on Shakespeare's '' The Tempest'', but he was a victim of the Second Red Scare and was blacklisted from the film industry. Biography Adler was the son of Abe Adler (a stage manager) who, in turn, was the son of Yiddish theater star Jacob Adler by his first wife Sonya ("Sophia") Adler. Per the bio on back jacket of Adler's novel ''Mach 1'', "He majored in English at New York University, wrote publicity for Robert Ripley of 'Believe It Or Not,', owned a New York theatre at twenty-one, presented touring opera companies, served in the air force in World War II in the Fifth Air Force, Far Eastern Air Force and Thirteenth Bomber Command. The Giant Behemoth
''The Giant Behemoth'' is a 1959 British-American science fiction giant monster film directed by Eugène Lourié, with special effects by Willis H. O'Brien, Pete Peterson, Irving Block, Jack Rabin, and Louis de Witt. The film stars Gene Evans and André Morell. The screenplay was written by blacklisted author Daniel Lewis James (under the name "Daniel Hyatt") with director Lourié. Originally a story about an amorphous blob of radiation, the script was changed at the distributor's insistence to a style similar to ''The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms'' (1953), though elements of the original concept remain in the early parts of the film and in the "nuclear-breathing" power of the titular monster. Hollywood Blacklist
The Hollywood blacklist was an entertainment industry blacklist, broader than just Hollywood, put in effect in the mid-20th century in the United States during the early years of the Cold War. The blacklist involved the practice of denying employment to entertainment industry professionals believed to be or to have been Communists or sympathizers. Actors, screenwriters, directors, musicians, and other American entertainment professionals were barred from work by the studios. This was usually done on the basis of their membership in, alleged membership in, or sympathy with the Communist Party USA, or on the basis of their refusal to assist Congressional investigations into the party's activities.
