South Park (Pittsburgh)
South Park is a county park in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is the second largest in the county's network of nine parks. Completed in 1931, South Park is sited south of Downtown Pittsburgh in Bethel Park municipality and South Park Township. The park offers a wave pool, golf course, ice skating rink, picnic groves, tennis courts, and miles of trails. The South Park Nature Center offers public nature and environmental education programs year round during the week and on the weekend. The Allegheny County Park Rangers also offer a wide variety of environmental education programs. Beginning in the 1930s, South Park was used as the county fairgrounds and for more than thirty years attracted a half million people each season. By the late 1960s, farming in the county had declined and the fair was discontinued in 1971. South Park Township is a township in the southern part of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States, near Pittsburgh. The population was 13,416 at the 2010 census. A large portion of the township consists of a county park of the same name. History Composed of portions of St. Clair and Jefferson townships in 1845, South Park was originally called Snowden Township, named after John M. Snowden, a prominent businessman, politician and former Pittsburgh mayor, who had died earlier that year. In the 1930s, Allegheny County acquired several large parcels of farm land mostly within Snowden Township and created a regional recreational area named South Park. The huge success of South Park, and the fact the facility occupies roughly one-third of the community's total area, eventually prompted a 1966 referendum in which the township was renamed. Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation (PHLF) Historic Landmark plaque program was begun in 1968 in order to identify architecturally significant structures as well as significant pieces of Pittsburgh's local heritage throughout Allegheny County. Nominations are reviewed by the private non-profit foundation's Historic Plaque Designation Committee composed of trustees, architectural historians, and citizens. These designations are not to be confused with City of Pittsburgh historic designations. Beginning in 2010, the committee expanded its program to consider applications for historic status from counties surrounding Allegheny, extending its reach to a 250-mile radius from the city, as long as the site has a connection to the greater Pittsburgh region. Historic designation by the foundation does not protect the building from alteration or demolition.
