Allan Taylor (diplomat)
Allan Robert Taylor (23 August 1941 – 19 June 2007) was an Australian diplomat, best known for his service as Director-General of the Australian Secret Intelligence Service from 1998 to 2003. Early life and education Taylor was born in Wynyard, Tasmania, and spent his childhood in various Tasmanian towns before boarding at Launceston Church Grammar School. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Modern History from the University of Tasmania. He then studied as Tasmania's 1963 Rhodes scholar at the University of Oxford, where he received a Master of Arts in History in 1965. His studies led to an interest in diplomacy, and in 1966 he joined the Department of External Affairs, Australia's foreign service. Diplomatic career Taylor's early postings were to Pakistan and Thailand. After a posting in Canberra, he was sent to Jakarta to serve as political counsellor for the Australian Embassy. Allan Taylor (1 December 1905 – 1981) was an English professional footballer who played for North Shields, Newcastle United, South Shields South Shields () is a coastal town in South Tyneside, Tyne and Wear, England. Lieutenant General Sir Allan Macnab Taylor KBE MC (26 March 1919 – 13 June 2004) was a British Army officer who commanded 1st Division. Military career Educated at Fyling Hall School, Taylor was commissioned into the Royal Armoured Corps in 1940 during World War II. Allan Kerr Taylor (30 December 1832 – 14 April 1890) was a notable New Zealand landowner and businessman. He was born in Negapatam, India in 1832. His second wife was Sophia Taylor (née Davis). His father was General William Taylor. Personal life In 1848, he emigrated to New Zealand where his father owned land at west Tamaki, now absorbed into the Auckland suburban area. At the age of 16, he bought of land at Mount Albert, later adding another , and calling the property ''Alberton''. Allan Kerr Taylor's three eldest brothers lived in Auckland near the Tamaki River: Charles John Taylor at Glen Orchard (now Saint Heliers), William Innes Taylor at Glen Innes, and Richard James Taylor at Glen Dowie. The names of the latter two properties became the names of the suburbs Glen Innes and Glendowie respectively. Allan Taylor (born 28 November 1984) is an English professional snooker player, who comes from Basildon, Essex but resides in Southend. He used to work at a police station in Birkenhead, supporting the police force by studying CCTV footage. Taylor turned professional in 2013 after being the sixth highest ranked amateur on the PTC Order of Merit, winning a tour card for the 2013–14 and 2014–15 seasons. He then remained on tour until 2019, however upon finishing outside the top 64 he lost his tour card and was unable to re-qualify for the tour through Q School. He practices and prepares in St Mary's Mens Club. Career Debut season Taylor won just two matches during the 2013–14 season to end his first season on tour ranked world number 123. 2014/2015 season Taylor lost 6–2 to Anthony McGill in the first round of the UK Championship. Allan Taylor (born 30 September 1945 in Brighton, England) is an English singer-songwriter who has written and performed music around the world for over 50 years. Career Taylor left school in 1961. He was an apprentice in telecommunications until 1965. Inspired by skiffle and the beat generation, he started singing and playing guitar in the folk clubs of Brighton through his teenage years. He became a full-time musician in 1966, and left Brighton to become part of the music scene in London. He toured Great Britain, playing various folk clubs, including the Troubadour Club in London, sometimes supporting Fairport Convention. In 1970 he signed a recording contract with United Artists, recording the albums ''Sometimes'' (1971) and ''The Lady'' (1972). Taylor moved to New York and became part of the singer-songwriter scene in Greenwich Village, playing at clubs such as Gerde's, The Gaslight Cafe, The Bitter End, the Mercer Arts Center, and The Bottom Line.
