Allan Martin (footballer)
Allan Martin (26 February 1872 – 12 May 1906) was a Scottish footballer who played for Rangers, Leith Athletic, Celtic and Hibernian. Record of pre-war Scottish League Players John Litster / Scottish Football Historian magazine, October 2012 He finished as the top scorer in the Scottish Football League Division One in the 1895–96 season. Career Raised in Glasgow and trained as an iron works furnace tender (a trade he was reluctant to curtail as his reputation as a footballer increased), Martin began his career as a half back with Northern F.C. and was selected for the Scottish Football Alliance XI against the rival Scottish Football League in 1892. Forwards (also known as attackers) are outfield positions in an association football team who play the furthest up the pitch and are therefore most responsible for scoring goals as well as assisting them. As with any attacking player, the role of the forward relies heavily on being able to create space for attack. Founded in 1883, the Glasgow Football Association, based in the city of Glasgow, Scotland and affiliated to the national Scottish Football Association, is one of the oldest such bodies in football. In the modern game its influence is limited, the remit being "to represent the interests of the senior football clubs in Glasgow". Glasgow Merchants Charity Cup
The Glasgow Merchants' Charity Cup was a knockout football tournament open to teams from in and around Glasgow and later on in the tournament's history, teams from outwith Glasgow. Invitations were made and sent out by the Glasgow Charity Cup Committee (GCCC) at their discretion, but no criteria were ever published. Like many domestic competitions in Scottish football, it was dominated by the Old Firm of Rangers and Celtic, with 31 and 28 victories each respectively. In the latter years of the tournament, it ceased being a knockout tournament and became a one-off contest between a Glasgow Select and a team invited from the English League. Glasgow Cup
The Glasgow Cup is a football tournament open to teams from Glasgow, Scotland. Operated by the Glasgow Football Association, it was competed for annually by senior Glasgow clubs from 1887 until 1989. It is now (since the 2019–20 amended rules) competed for between the senior teams of Clyde, Partick Thistle and Queen's Park and the youth teams of Celtic and Rangers, and has used both knockout and round robin formats to determine the finalists. The cup was dominated by the city's Old Firm rivals, Rangers and Celtic, who won the competition 44 times and 29 times respectively (including one shared win) while it was a senior competition. Only five times did the final not feature either Rangers or Celtic (1889, 1915, 1946, 1947, and 1989). The Rosebery Charity Cup was a football competition organised for senior clubs from the East of Scotland. History The tournament was organised by and named for an early patron of Scottish football Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery and received continued support from his son, Harry Primrose, 6th Earl of Rosebery, after Archibald's death in 1929. A charitable competition, the chief beneficiaries of the funds it raised were the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and the Leith Hospital.
