Allan is a rural locality in the Southern Downs Region, Queensland, Australia. It was formerly known as Sandy Creek. In the , Allan had a population of 87 people. Geography The Condamine River forms the north-eastern boundary of the locality, while Sandy Creek flows through the locality from Leslie Dam (the locality) to the west towards Leslie to the north-west (eventually becoming a tributary of the Condamine River. The Cunningham Highway passes through the locality from the south-east ( Rosenthal Heights) towards the west (Leslie Dam). The South Western railway line runs roughly parallel to the south of the highway; there is no railway station within the locality. Major arterial roads in the locality are Sandy Creek Road which runs from the highway north-west to Leslie. The Leslie Dam Road runs south from the highway towards the Leslie Dam. Southern Downs Regional Council
The Southern Downs Region is a local government area in the Darling Downs region of Queensland, Australia, along the state's boundary with New South Wales. It was created in 2008 from a merger of the Shire of Warwick and the Shire of Stanthorpe. It has an estimated operating budget of A$22.8 million. Allan State School
Allan State School is a heritage-listed former state school and teacher's residence at 280 Sandy Creek Road, Allan, Southern Downs Region, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Department of Public Works (Queensland) and Richard George Suter and was built from 1872 to 1886. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 3 May 2019. History The former Allan State School was originally named Sandy Creek State School and was established in 1872 on a site. Situated approximately WNW of Warwick, on the Darling Downs, the school retains an excellent and highly intact example of a Suter-designed school building. The teacher's residence, also Suter-designed and constructed at the same time as the school, is considered to be the only known example to survive in Queensland. Allan Cunningham (13 July 1791 – 27 June 1839) was an English botany, botanist and List of explorers, explorer, primarily known for his travels in Australia to collect plants. Early life Cunningham was born in Wimbledon, London, Wimbledon, Surrey, England, the son of Allan Cunningham (head gardener at Wimbledon Park House), who came from Renfrewshire, Scotland, and his English wife Sarah (née Juson/Jewson née Dicken). Leslie Dam
Leslie Dam is a dam in the locality of the same name Leslie Dam, Southern Downs Region, Queensland, Australia. It is from Warwick town centre. Freshwater fishing and water sports facilities are available. The dam was named after Patrick Leslie (1815–1881), an early settler in the region and the first person to buy land in Warwick. SunWater is undertaking a dam spillway capacity upgrade program to ensure a consistently high level of safety for the dams under their control, including the Leslie. The spillway will be upgraded in the longer term. History The dam was extended in 1986, increasing capacity by 100%. The dam's highest level was reached on 12 September 1988 when waters in the dam peaked at 20 cm above the spillway. The next highest level was 13 cm above the spillway on the 28 May 1990. South Western Railway Line, Queensland
The South Western line is a narrow gauge railway line in the southern part of the state of Queensland, Australia. It junctions from the Southern line immediately south of Warwick station and proceeded westwards for a distance of 413 km to the town of Dirranbandi. A western extension to Boomie in New South Wales, approved by the Queensland Parliament in 1914, was never constructed. The Thallon-to-Dirranbandi section was closed on 2 September 2010. It services the small towns of Inglewood (junction of the now closed Texas branch) and Goondiwindi as well as the villages of Yelarbon and Thallon among others. Cunningham Highway
The Cunningham Highway is a national highway located in south-eastern Queensland, Australia. The highway links the Darling Downs region with the urbanised outskirts of via Cunninghams Gap. The Cunningham carries the National Highway 15 shield between Ipswich and north of at its junction with the New England Highway at Glengallan where both the Cunningham and the New England head south concurrently to Warwick. Thereafter, the Cunningham carries the National Highway 42 shield to its south-western terminus with the Leichhardt Highway at Goondiwindi.
