All My Relations Arts
All My Relations Arts is a Native American arts organization in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is a project of the Native American Community Development Institute (NACDI). History The organization was founded in 1999 by Shirlee Stone. It was initially a project of the American Indian Business Development Corporation and hosted over 23 exhibitions at Ancient Traders Gallery until 2009. All My Relations has also been exhibited at The Edge Center in Bigfork, Minnesota, Cornucopia Gallery in Lanesboro, Minnesota, and Mill City Museum in Minneapolis. Following the closure of Ancient Traders Gallery, All My Relations relocated to a space at 1414 East Franklin Avenue. Artists who have exhibited with the arts organization include Mona Smith, Jim Denomie, Andrea Carlson, Carl Gawboy, Gordon Coons, and Sam English. Mitakuye Oyasin
Mitákuye Oyás’iŋ (All Are Related) is a phrase from the Lakota language. It reflects the world view of interconnectedness held by the Lakota people of North America. This concept and phrase is expressed in many Yankton Sioux prayers, as well as by ceremonial people in other Lakota communities. The phrase translates in English as "all my relatives," "we are all related," or "all my relations." Andrea Carlson
Andrea Carlson (born 1979) is a mixed-media American visual artist currently based in Chicago. She also maintains a studio space and has a strong artistic presence in Minneapolis–Saint Paul, Minnesota. Education Carlson is a descendant of the Grand Portage Band of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe. She earned a BA in studio arts and American Indian studies (language emphasis route) from the University of Minnesota in 2003. She has stated that "the greatest gift I took from American Indian Studies is the Ojibwe Language." In 2005, she earned an MFA in Visual Studies from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Art career Carlson draws from her Anishinaabe, French, and Scandinavian heritages as a basis for her highly stylized work. Theresa Spence (born 1963) is a former chief of the Attawapiskat First Nation in Canada. archived from original She was a prominent figure in the Attawapiskat housing and infrastructure crisis, Idle No More, and other First Nations issues. Tanya Lukin Linklater
Tanya Lukin Linklater is an Indigenous artist-choreographer of Alutiiq descent. She is enrolled in the Native Villages of Afognak and Port Lions in southwestern Alaska. Her work consists of performance collaborations, videos, photographs, and installations. Biography Linklater was raised in Afognak and Port Lions in Kodiak Island (Alaska). Married to First Nations Omaskêko Ininiwakartist Duane Linklater, she now lives and works in North Bay, Ontario, Canada. Her practice includes performance, works for camera, writings, and installations, with an emphasis in collaboration with other Indigenous artists. Dyani White Hawk
Dyani White Hawk (full name Dyani White Hawk Polk) (born 1976) is a contemporary artist and curator of Sicangu Lakota, German, and Welsh ancestry based out of Minnesota. From 2010 to 2015, White Hawk was a curator for the Minneapolis gallery All My Relations. As an artist, White Hawk's work aesthetic is characterized by a combination of modern abstract painting and traditional Lakota art. White Hawk's pieces reflect both her Western, American upbringing and her indigenous ancestors mediums and modes for creating visual art. Jim Denomie
Jim Denomie (1955 – March 1, 2022) was an American Ojibwe painter, known for his colorful, at times comical, looks at United States history and Native Americans. Background Early life A member of the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, Denomie lived on reservation until the age of four when his family moved to Chicago, Illinois due to forced government relocation programs taking place within Native communities in the 1960s. This program, started by Dillon S. Lakota Language
Lakota ( ), also referred to as Lakhota, Teton or Teton Sioux, is a Siouan language spoken by the Lakota people of the Sioux tribes. Lakota is mutually intelligible with the two dialects of the Dakota language, especially Western Dakota, and is one of the three major varieties of the Sioux language. Mill City Museum
Mill City Museum is a Minnesota Historical Society museum in Minneapolis. It opened in 2003 built in the ruins of the Washburn "A" Mill next to Mill Ruins Park on the banks of the Mississippi River. The museum focuses on the founding and growth of Minneapolis, especially flour milling and the other industries that used hydropower from Saint Anthony Falls. The mill complex, dating from the 1870s, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is part of the St. Anthony Falls Historic District and within the National Park Service's Mississippi National River and Recreation Area. Lanesboro, Minnesota
Lanesboro is a city in Fillmore County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 754 at the 2010 census. It was named after F. A. Lane, an early landowner. The South Fork of the Root River flows through it, with a waterfall dam across from Sylvan Park. The Root River State Trail and other bike paths also serve the town.
