All American Girls (song)
"All American Girls" is a song by the American group Sister Sledge. It was originally released in 1981 as a single (music), single. The song became an international hit. It was written by songwriter Allee Willis along with Joni Sledge and Narada Michael Walden's then wife Lisa Walden. Released in January 1981, the song peaked at number three on the R&B/Soul charts and 79 on the Hot 100 charts in late March 1981. It was also a Top 10 hit in the Low Countries, reaching number eight in the Netherlands and number six in Belgium (Flanders). It also charted in Germany (number 27), Italy (number 34) and the UK (number 41). The song is a patriotic hymn to feminism and the right of American women to receive the same professional and social recognition as men; the song was regarded as a patriotic and propaganda piece by Ronald Reagan's then newly elected conservative government and is often used as a soundtrack for feminist parades of black women's rights. Sister Sledge
Sister Sledge is an American musical vocal group from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Formed in 1971, the group consisted of sisters Debbie, Joni, Kim, and Kathy Sledge. The siblings achieved international success at the height of the disco era. In 1979, they released their breakthrough album '' We Are Family'', which peaked at number three on the ''Billboard'' 200 and included the 1979 US top-10 singles "He's the Greatest Dancer" and " We Are Family". A third single, " Lost in Music", reached the US top 40. "We Are Family" earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Kathy Sledge (born January 6, 1959) is an American singer–songwriter and producer. Sledge is best known as the youngest and founding member of Sister Sledge, an American vocal group which is made up of her sisters that formed in 1971. After achieving success beginning the late–1970s thru the mid–1980s with Sister Sledge, Sledge embarked on her solo career in 1989. Narada Michael Walden ( ; Michael Walden; born April 23, 1952) is an American musician, singer, songwriter and record producer. He acquired the nickname Narada from Sri Chinmoy. He began his career as a drummer, working primarily in the jazz fusion realm, appearing with John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Chick Corea, Jaco Pastorius, Wayne Shorter and Weather Report, and Allan Holdsworth. After being mentored by Quincy Jones, he transitioned into a role as a songwriter and producer, working in the 1980s and 1990s with numerous R & B acts such as Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, as well as other singers across a number of genres.
