All-Party Parliamentary Group For Tribal Peoples
The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Tribal Peoples was a group in the UK Parliament, chaired by Martin Horwood MP, that was founded in 2007. Its stated aim was to "raise parliamentary and public awareness of tribal peoples". During its operation, the Group met two or three times a year and one of its main objectives is to press for ratification of ILO Convention 169 on the rights of indigenous and tribal peoples. The British international indigenous rights organization Survival International worked as its secretariat, and also funded occasional group receptions and events. The Chair, Martin Horwood MP, lost his seat in the 2015 general election and the group was not reformed during the new parliamentary session. Martin Horwood
Martin Charles Horwood (born 12 October 1962) is a British Liberal Democrat politician who represented South West England in the European Parliament from 2019 to 2020. He previously served as the Member of Parliament for Cheltenham from 2005 to 2015. During his tenure, he founded the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Tribal Peoples. Horwood now serves as Director of Engagement and Impact at Development Initiatives. Early life and education Horwood was born in St. Paul's, Cheltenham. His parents lived first in St. Mark's and then in Leckhampton, where his mother still lives. He attended two independent schools in Cheltenham, Pate's Junior School and Cheltenham College. The Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention, 1989 is an International Labour Organization Convention, also known as ILO Convention 169, or C169. It is the major binding international convention concerning indigenous peoples and tribal peoples, and a forerunner of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Survival International
Survival International is a human rights organisation formed in 1969, a London based charity that campaigns for the rights of indigenous and/or tribal peoples and uncontacted peoples. The organisation's campaigns generally focus on tribal peoples' desires to keep their ancestral lands. Survival International calls these peoples "some of the most vulnerable on earth", and aims to eradicate what it calls "misconceptions" used to justify violations of human rights. It also aims to publicize harm caused to tribes by corporations and governments. Survival International states that it aims to help foster tribal people's self-determination. 2015 United Kingdom General Election
The 2015 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday, 7 May 2015 to elect 650 members to the House of Commons. It was the first and only general election held at the end of a Parliament under the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011. Local elections took place in most areas on the same day.
