Alkali Lake, British Columbia
Alkali Lake is an unincorporated community in the Cariboo region of the British Columbia Interior, Central Interior of British Columbia, Canada, located 40 kilometres south of the city of Williams Lake, British Columbia, Williams Lake en route to Dog Creek, British Columbia, Dog Creek and the Gang Ranch, at about 780 m (2560 ft) above sea level. The settlement, and the adjoining reserves of the Alkali Lake Indian Band, get their name from Alkali Lake (British Columbia), Alkali Lake, which gets its name from an outcrop of alkali on the hillside above it; the lake itself is not an Soda lake, alkali lake. The economy of the area is based on cattle ranching and small scale tourism, although in the past it was important as a way station on one of the various trails to the Cariboo goldfields farther north. Cariboo
The Cariboo is an intermontane region of British Columbia, Canada, centered on a plateau stretching from Fraser Canyon to the Cariboo Mountains. The name is a reference to the caribou that were once abundant in the region. Williams Lake is a city in the Central Interior of British Columbia, in the central part of a region known as the Cariboo. Dog Creek, British Columbia
Dog Creek is an unincorporated ranching settlement, located on the Fraser River, in the Cariboo region of British Columbia, Canada. Located on the northeast side of the Fraser's confluence with Dog Creek, it is opposite Gang Ranch on the west side of the river, which is connected by an old suspension bridge serving local ranch roads. Dog Creek's first post office opened in 1873. The Dog Creek reserves of the Canoe Creek/Dog Creek Indian Band are located east of the settlement. Alkali Lake Indian Band
The Esk'etemc First Nation, also known as the Alkali Lake Indian Band, is a First Nations government of the Secwepemc (Shuswap) people, located at Alkali Lake in the Cariboo region of the Central Interior of the Canadian province of British Columbia. It was created when the government of the then-Colony of British Columbia established an Indian reserve system in the 1860s. It is one of three Secwepemc bands that is not a member of either the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council or the Northern Shuswap Tribal Council.
