Alison Coffin
Alison Coffin (born 1970) is a Canadian politician, who was formerly the leader of the Newfoundland and Labrador New Democratic Party (NL NDP). She is a former member of the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly. In her professional life, she has developed policy and strategic plans for the provincial government, taught at Memorial University, and consulted on public policy, pension plans, and the provincial budget. For several years, she also ran a successful consulting company. Background Coffin was born in Corner Brook and was raised in Joe Batt's Arm along with two brothers. She graduated from Memorial University with an economics degree in 1993 and later completed her master's degree at York University in Toronto, graduating in 1997. Corner Brook ( 2021 population: 19,333 CA 29,762) is a city located on the west coast of the island of Newfoundland in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Corner Brook is the fifth largest settlement in Newfoundland and Labrador. Located on the Bay of Islands at the mouth of the Humber River, the city is the second-largest population centre in the province behind St. John's, and smallest of three cities behind St. John's and Mount Pearl. As such, Corner Brook functions as a service centre for western and northern Newfoundland. The 2018 New Democratic Party of Newfoundland and Labrador leadership election was held in St. John's in April 2018 to nominate the successor of New Democratic Party of Newfoundland and Labrador leader Earle McCurdy, who resigned as head of the party effective September 30, 2017. Former leader Lorraine Michael was appointed interim leader before the convention. The deadline to register as a candidate was February 28, 2018. Tom Osborne (born 1964) is a politician in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. He represents the district of Waterford Valley in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly. He is a member of the Liberal Party, a former member of the Progressive Conservative Party, and a former Minister in Danny Williams' first cabinet. He is currently Minister of Health and Community Services in the Furey government. Osborne is the province's longest consecutively-serving MHA having been in the House of Assembly since 1996. George Murphy (Canadian Politician)
George Walter Murphy (April 22, 1963 – June 5, 2021) was a Canadian politician, who served in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 2011 to 2015. He represented the electoral district of St. John's East for the Newfoundland and Labrador New Democratic Party. Politics Murphy first ran for election as a Liberal candidate in the district of St. John's East in the 2003 election, placing second with 14.56 per cent of the vote. In November 2010 Murphy decided to leave the Liberal party and run for the NDP nomination in the Conception Bay East-Bell Island by-election. Murphy placed second and received 26.14 per cent of the vote. In the 2011 provincial election Murphy ran as the NDP candidate in St. John's East. CTV Atlantic (formerly known as the Atlantic Television, or ATV) is a system of four television stations in the Maritimes, owned and operated by the CTV Television Network, a division of Bell Media. Despite the name, it is not available on basic cable or analog in Newfoundland and Labrador even though that province is part of Atlantic Canada. In Canadian politics, a leadership review is a vote held at a political party convention in which delegates decide whether to endorse the incumbent party leader or schedule a leadership convention to elect a new leader. In most parties at present, such a vote is required at the first convention following a general election. While a leadership election is only required if the incumbent leader fails to receive support from a simple majority of delegates (or if a motion to hold a leadership election passes by one vote), in practice leaders who do not win the review by a substantial margin are expected to either call a leadership election and re-offer or resign altogether. The 2021 Newfoundland and Labrador general election was held on March 25, 2021, to elect members of the 50th General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador. Under the province's fixed election date law, the vote was tentatively scheduled for October 10, 2023, but a caveat in the law mandates that an election must be held within one year of a new Premier assuming office. Premier Furey assumed the role on August 19, 2020, and requested to Lieutenant Governor Judy Foote to issue the writs of election on January 15, 2021. However, an unexpected COVID-19 surge in the week leading up to the election caused voting to be delayed in the Avalon Peninsula, before all in-person voting was eventually cancelled, delaying the election for every district until March 1, 2021. Labrador West (electoral District)
Labrador West is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. From 1975 to 1996, the district was known as Menihek. Known as the iron ore capital of Canada with two modern mining communities, Labrador City and Wabush, the district has a strong base of labour support. This district was the first in Newfoundland and Labrador to send a New Democratic member to the House of Assembly, electing party leader Peter Fenwick in a 1984 by-election.
