Alice Vaughan, Countess Of Carbery
Alice Vaughan, Countess of Carbery (1619-1689), known before her marriage as Alice Egerton, was the daughter of John Egerton, 1st Earl of Bridgewater. She was a musician and performer who acted in two notable masques: Aurelian Townshend's ''Tempe Restored'' (1632), and John Milton's ''Comus (Milton), Maske Performed at Ludlow Castle'' (1634). Alice Egerton was the youngest of eleven daughters. She starred in the singing role of The Lady in Milton's Comus (Milton), ''Mask''e when it was performed at Ludlow Castle in 1634, in honor of her father's appointment as Lord President of Wales. Her younger brothers, John Egerton, 2nd Earl of Bridgewater, John and Thomas, appeared as The Lady's Brothers. Lady Alice Egerton (1619-1689), Circle Of John Hayls
Lady Alice Egerton (7 August 1923 – 7 October 1977) was a British courtier from the Egerton family. Lady Alice was the youngest child of the John Egerton, 4th Earl of Ellesmere, 4th Earl of Ellesmere and his wife, Violet. In 1949, she replaced her sister, Lady Margaret Colville, as a Lady-in-Waiting to the then Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Princess Elizabeth and became a Woman of the Bedchamber in 1953. Lady Alice never married and remained in service to the Queen for the next 24 years. In 1977, she was found dead in her home near Battle of Flodden Field, Flodden Field in Northumberland; the suicide was claimed by some to have resulted from being dismissed from the Royal Household, allegedly for warning the Queen about Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip's infidelity, although Lady Alice's family attribute it to her history of depression. Alice Spencer, Countess Of Derby
Alice Spencer, Countess of Derby (4 May 1559 – 23 January 1637) was an English noblewoman from the Spencer family and noted patron of the arts. Poet Edmund Spenser represented her as "Amaryllis" in his eclogue ''Colin Clouts Come Home Againe'' (1595) and dedicated his poem ''The Teares of the Muses'' (1591) to her. Her first husband was Ferdinando Stanley, 5th Earl of Derby, a claimant to the English throne. Alice's eldest daughter, Anne Stanley, Countess of Castlehaven, was heiress presumptive to Queen Elizabeth I. She married secondly in 1600 Thomas Egerton, 1st Viscount Brackley and thus became a member of the Egerton family. Richard Vaughan, 2nd Earl Of Carbery
Richard Vaughan, 2nd Earl of Carbery KB, PC (c. 1600 – 1686), styled The Honourable from 1621 until 1628 and then Lord Vaughan until 1634, was a Welsh soldier, peer and politician. Born the son of a Welsh noble with an Irish peerage, Vaughan initially entered the House of Commons as Member of Parliament for the Welsh constituency of Carmarthenshire in 1624. He held the seat until 1629, when King Charles I decided to rule without parliament until 1640. Knighted in 1626, he appears to have little interest in politics, and after inheriting the estates and titles of his father in 1634, retired to the life of a country gentleman in South Wales. The outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642 disturbed his peace, and after being courted by both King and Parliament, he declared as a Royalist. ''Arcades'' is a masque written by John Milton and performed on 4 May 1634. The piece was written to celebrate the character of Alice Spencer, the Countess Dowager of Derby, widow of Ferdinando Stanley, 5th Earl of Derby, during her 75th birthday. The masque distinguishes Spencer as having a greater far superior to other noble women by titling Spencer as queen of a metaphorical Arcadia that is far superior to any other realm. The piece served as a basis for Milton's later masque, ''Comus''. Background Spencer's family invited Milton to write a masque for a celebration to honour her on her 75th birthday, 4 May 1634. This arrangement was made possible through the intervention of Henry Lawes, the Earl's music tutor for his children, and friend to Milton's father. ''The Masque of Queens, Celebrated From the House of Fame'' is one of the earlier works in the series of masques that Ben Jonson composed for the House of Stuart in the early 17th century. Performed at Whitehall Palace on 2 February 1609, it marks a notable development in the masque form, in that Jonson defines and elaborates the anti-masque for the first time in its pages. John Egerton, 1st Earl of Bridgewater KB, PC (1579 – 4 December 1649) was an English peer and politician from the Egerton family. The son of Thomas Egerton, 1st Viscount Brackley and Elizabeth Ravenscroft, he matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford in 1589 at the age of 10, and received a Bachelor of Arts in 1594. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Callington from 1597 to 1598, and for Shropshire in 1601. Knighted on 8 April 1599, he was Baron of the Exchequer of Chester from 1599 to 1605. In 1603, Egerton was appointed Knight of the Order of the Bath and in 1605, he received a Master of Arts from the University of Oxford. Having succeeded to his father's titles in March 1617, he was created Earl of Bridgewater on 27 May 1617. Egerton was sworn of the Privy Council in 1626. John Egerton, 2nd Earl of Bridgewater PC (30 May 1623 – 26 October 1686) was an English nobleman from the Egerton family. Life He was a son of John Egerton, 1st Earl of Bridgewater and his wife Lady Frances Stanley. His maternal grandparents were Ferdinando Stanley, 5th Earl of Derby and his wife Alice Spencer. According to the Will of King Henry VIII, his mother, at one time, was second-in-line to inherit England's throne. However, Lady Frances Stanley's older sister, Anne Stanley, Countess of Castlehaven, was passed over for King James VI of Scotland.
