Alice Cooper (sculptor)
Alice Cooper (April 8, 1875 – March 4, 1937) was an American sculptor. Early life and education Cooper was born in Glenwood, Iowa and was raised in Denver, Colorado. She studied under Preston Powers (son of the sculptor Hiram Powers) then at the Art Institute of Chicago with Lorado Taft and the Art Students League of New York through about 1901. Career Cooper is best known for her bronze figure of Sacajawea ('' Sacajawea and Jean-Baptiste'') originally produced as the centerpiece for the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition in Portland, Oregon, 1905, unveiled in a ceremony attended by Susan B. Anthony and other prominent feminists. This figure now stands in Washington Park. Glenwood, Iowa
Glenwood is a city in, and the county seat of, Mills County, Iowa, United States. The population was 5,073 in the 2020 census, a decline from 5,358 in 2000. History Located in a hollow of the Loess Hills on the east side of the Missouri River, Glenwood was established by Mormons in 1848 as Coonsville. It prospered during the California Gold Rush largely due to the grain mill on Keg Creek. Coonsville was the scene of anti-Mormon mob violence. It became the county seat of Mills County in 1851. In 1852, after most Mormons left for Utah, it was renamed Glenwood after a Presbyterian minister, Glenn Wood. The community supported the creation of Nebraska Territory in 1854. Two Glenwood attorneys were elected to the Nebraska territorial legislature, and they were run out of town for accepting shares in Scriptown. Eames and Young was an American architecture firm based in St. Louis, Missouri, active nationally, and responsible for several buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. History The principals were Thomas Crane Young, FAIA and William Sylvester Eames, FAIA. Young was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and came to St. Louis to attend Washington University, then spent two years at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1880, and briefly worked for the Boston firm of Van Brunt & Howe.
