Alice Bunker Stockham
Alice Bunker Stockham (November 8, 1833 – December 3, 1912) was an obstetrician and gynecologist from Chicago, and the fifth woman to become a doctor in the United States. She promoted gender equality, dress reform, birth control, and male and female sexual fulfillment for successful marriages. A well-traveled and well-read person who counted among her friends Leo Tolstoy and Havelock Ellis, she also visited Sweden and from her trips to schools there she brought back the idea of teaching children domestic crafts, thus single-handedly establishing shop and home economics classes in the United States. Activism Alice Bunker Stockham was born in Cardington, Ohio on November 8, 1833. She lectured against the use of corsets by women, advocated complete abstinence from alcohol and tobacco, and believed in women's rights. Stockham was a vegetarian. Cardington, Ohio
Cardington is a village (United States)#Ohio, village in Morrow County, Ohio, Morrow County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,047 at the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census. Mount Gilead, Ohio, the county seat, is located northeast of Cardington on U.S. Route 42. History A post office called Cardington was established in 1827. Cardington was named for the first industrial tool the town had, the carding machine. The village itself was founded in 1836. A series of tornadoes on June 11 and 13 of 1981, each killing four people, destroyed a very large portion of the village. Due to the small size of the town, and the extent of the damage to the business district, a very detrimental impact on the community was felt. The Perfect Matrimony
''The Perfect Matrimony'' or ''The Door to Enter Into Initiation'' is the first of approximately seventy books written by Samael Aun Weor. It was first published in 1950 then revised and expanded in 1961. It describes the esoteric teachings of alchemy, tantra, kabbalah, the mysteries of the Maya, Aztecs, ancient Egyptians, Tibetans, and Essenes, among others. Samael Aun Weor
Samael Aun Weor ( he, סמאל און ואור; March 6, 1917 – December 24, 1977), born Víctor Manuel Gómez Rodríguez, was a spiritual teacher and author of over sixty books of esoteric spirituality. He taught and formed groups under the banner of "Universal Gnosticism", or simply gnosis. A prolific author of syncretistic books, Gómez first made a name in the early gnostic movement in his native country of Colombia, before moving to Mexico in 1956, where his movement gained increased popularity, and his works became popular among practitioners of occultism and esotericism, and were translated to other languages. Following his self-described "awakening" or "initiation" in 1948, Gómez started calling himself Aun Weor, which according to his own words would mean "the verb or messenger of God." John Humphrey Noyes
John Humphrey Noyes (September 3, 1811 – April 13, 1886) was an American preacher, radical religious philosopher, and Utopian socialism, utopian socialist. Oneida Society
The Oneida Community was a perfectionist religious communal society founded by John Humphrey Noyes and his followers in 1848 near Oneida, New York. The community believed that Jesus had already returned in AD 70, making it possible for them to bring about Jesus's millennial kingdom themselves, and be free of sin and perfect in this world, not just in Heaven (a belief called '' perfectionism''). The Oneida Community practiced communalism (in the sense of communal property and possessions), group marriage, male sexual continence, and mutual criticism. The community's original 87 members grew to 172 by February 1850, 208 by 1852, and 306 by 1878. Onan ''Aunan'' was a figure detailed in the Book of Genesis chapter 38, as the second son of Judah and Shuah, and the brother of Er and Shelah. After being commanded by Judah to procreate with the late Er's wife Tamar, he instead "spilled his seed on the ground whenever he went in" because "the offspring would not be his", and was thus put to death by Yahweh. Karezza
''Coitus reservatus'' (''coitus'', "sexual intercourse, union" and ''reservatus'', "reserved, saved"), also known as sexual continence, is a form of sexual intercourse in which the man does not attempt to ejaculate within his partner, but instead attempts to remain at the plateau phase of intercourse for as long as possible, avoiding the seminal emission. The Comstock laws were a set of federal acts passed by the United States Congress under the Grant administration along with related state laws.Dennett p.9 The "parent" act (Sect. 211) was passed on March 3, 1873, as the Act for the Suppression of Trade in, and Circulation of, Obscene Literature and Articles of Immoral Use.
