Alibi (America Album)
''Alibi'' is the ninth studio album by American folk rock duo America, released by Capitol Records in 1980. History Prior to their second album on Capitol, Bunnell and Beckley amicably parted ways with George Martin in an effort to try a new musical direction. For the new album, the group utilized two producers -- Matthew McCauley and Fred Mollin. While ''Silent Letter'' was recorded by Bunnell, Beckley and their backing band (Willie Leacox, Michael Woods, David Dickey and Jim Calire), ''Alibi'' was a virtual roll-call of the burgeoning West Coast music scene. The recording included musicians such as Timothy B. Schmit, Waddy Wachtel, Mike Baird, Lee Sklar, Richard Page, Norton Buffalo and Steve Lukather. ''Alibi'', released in August 1980, was the second America album not to feature a picture of the band members on the cover. Norton Buffalo
Phillip Jackson (September 28, 1951 – October 30, 2009), best known as Norton Buffalo, was an American singer-songwriter, country and blues harmonica player, record producer, bandleader and recording artist who was a versatile proponent of the harmonica, including chromatic and diatonic. Career Buffalo, the son of a harmonica player, was born in Oakland, California, and raised in Richmond, California. At John F. Kennedy High School he performed in a series of bands. By the early 1970s he gained renown as a San Francisco Bay Area musician, playing with such Bay Area groups as Clover, The Moonlighters led by Bill Kirchen, and Elvin Bishop. ''Perspective'' is the twelfth studio album by American folk rock duo America, released by Capitol Records on September 21, 1984. History After several years of failed albums and singles, America returned to the top ten in 1982 with their Russ Ballard-penned single, " You Can Do Magic". In an effort to recreate this success, America had Ballard produce their 1983 album, ''Your Move''. The results of that collaboration, however, were not altogether successful on an artistic or a commercial level. On America's next album, ''Perspective'', the group went in a radically different direction. "You Can Do Magic" is a song by singer-songwriter Russ Ballard that was recorded as a 1982 single by folk rock duo America from their album ''View from the Ground''. The song was one of two Ballard compositions on ''View from the Ground'', the other being "Jody". Ballard wrote both songs specifically for America at the behest of Rupert Perry, A&R vice president for Capitol Records. Ballard also produced the tracks marking a return to record production after a four-year hiatus; although Ballard had earlier hits as a songwriter, "You Can Do Magic" was his first major hit credit as a producer.
