Alho Alhoniemi
Alho Alhoniemi (born 1933 in Suomussalmi) is a Finnish linguist specializing in the Finno-Ugric languages. Alhoniemi graduated from high school in 1952 in Kannus. He obtained his PhD in 1967 with a thesis about the lative case In grammar, the lative (; abbreviated ) is a grammatical case which indicates motion to a location. Suomussalmi () is a municipality in Finland and is located in the Kainuu region about northeast of Kajaani, the capital of Kainuu and south of Kuusamo. The municipality has a population of () and covers an area of of which is water. The population density is . The municipality is unilingually Finnish. Ämmänsaari is the biggest built-up area in the municipality. Suomussalmi is the second southernmost part of the reindeer-herding area in Finland. Finno-Ugric ( or ; ''Fenno-Ugric'') or Finno-Ugrian (''Fenno-Ugrian''), is a traditional grouping of all languages in the Uralic language family except the Samoyedic languages. Its formerly commonly accepted status as a subfamily of Uralic is based on criteria formulated in the 19th century and is criticized by some contemporary linguists such as Tapani Salminen and Ante Aikio as inaccurate and misleading. In grammar, the lative (; abbreviated ) is a grammatical case which indicates motion to a location. It corresponds to the English prepositions "to" and "into". The lative case belongs to the group of the general local cases together with the locative and separative case. The term derives from the Latin ''lat-'', the fourth principle part of ''ferre'', "to bring, carry". The lative case is typical of the Uralic languages and it was one of the Proto-Uralic cases. The Mordvinic languages, also known as the Mordvin, Mordovian or Mordvinian languages (russian: мордовские языки, ''mordovskiye yazyki''), are a subgroup of the Uralic languages, comprising the closely related Erzya language and Moksha language, both spoken in Mordovia. Previously considered a single "Mordvin language", it is now treated as a small language grouping.
