Algernon Heneage
Admiral Sir Algernon Charles Fieschi Heneage (19 March 1833 – 10 June 1915) was a Royal Navy officer who went on to be Commander-in-Chief, The Nore. Dubbed "Pompo," he was known for his immaculate dress and his white-glove inspections of the ships under his command. Early life Born at Arthingworth, Northamptonshire, Heneage was the son of Charles Fieschi Heneage, by his marriage to Louisa Elizabeth Graves, a daughter of Thomas Graves, 2nd Baron Graves. His father was then a Captain in the British Army. Naval career Heneage was commissioned as a lieutenant into the Royal Navy in 1854. In 1861, he was commanding officer of HMS ''Falcon'', part of the West Africa Squadron. Promoted to captain in 1866, he took command of HMS ''Rodney'' in 1867 and then HMS ''Warrior'' in 1881. Leslie Ward
Sir Leslie Matthew Ward (21 November 1851 – 15 May 1922) was a British portrait artist and caricaturist who over four decades painted 1,325 portraits which were regularly published by '' Vanity Fair'', under the pseudonyms "Spy" and "Drawl". The portraits were produced as watercolours and turned into chromolithographs for publication in the magazine. These were then usually reproduced on better paper and sold as prints. Such was his influence in the genre that all ''Vanity Fair'' caricatures are sometimes referred to as "Spy cartoons" regardless of who the artist actually was. Early portraits, almost always full-length (judges at the bench being the main exception), had a stronger element of caricature and usually distorted the proportions of the body, with a very large head and upper body supported on much smaller lower parts. West Africa Squadron
The West Africa Squadron, also known as the Preventative Squadron, was a squadron of the British Royal Navy whose goal was to suppress the Atlantic slave trade by patrolling the coast of West Africa. Formed in 1808 after the British Parliament passed the Slave Trade Act 1807 and based out of Portsmouth, England, it remained an independent command until 1856 and then again from 1866 to 1867. The impact of the Squadron has been debated, with some commentators describing it as having a significant role in the ending of the slave trade and other commentators describing as being poorly resourced and plagued by corruption. Sailors in the Royal Navy considered it to be one of the worst postings due to the high levels of tropical disease. Admiral Sir Richard Wells (3 February 1833 – 9 October 1896) was a Royal Navy officer who went on to be Commander-in-Chief, The Nore. Naval career Wells joined the Royal Navy in 1847 and served in the Crimean War in 1855. He was on board HMS ''Bombay'' when she was accidentally burned in 1864 with the loss of 91 lives off Montevideo. Vice Admiral Charles Thomas Curme (2 August 1827 – 19 February 1892) was a Royal Navy officer who went on to be Commander-in-Chief, The Nore. Naval career Curme joined the Royal Navy in 1841. Charles Frederick Hotham
Admiral of the Fleet Sir Charles Frederick Hotham (20 March 1843 – 22 March 1925) was a Royal Navy officer. As a junior officer, he was a member of the naval brigade that fought the Māori people at the Battle of Rangiriri during the invasion of the Waikato and was also present at the Battle of Gate Pā during the Tauranga Campaign. He later took part in the bombardment of Alexandria during the Anglo-Egyptian War and then went ashore as Chief of Staff of the naval brigade, formed under Admiral Sir Beauchamp Seymour, which was dispatched to restore the authority of Khedive Tewfik Pasha in the face of Ahmed ‘Urabi's nationalist uprising against the administration. Sir Edmund Antrobus, 3rd Baronet, (3 September 1818 – 1 April 1899) was a British politician who sat as Member of Parliament for Surrey Eastern for six years as a Conservative, and Wilton for 22 years as a Whig/Liberal. Sir Edmund was the eldest son of Sir Edmund Antrobus, 2nd Baronet, and Anne Lindsay of Antrobus Hall (Cheshire) and Amesbury Abbey (Wiltshire). He was educated at St John's College, Cambridge. The elder Sir Edmund was a slave-owner, who had a number of sugar plantations in Jamaica, British Guiana and St Kitts. Cowes () is an English seaport town and civil parish on the Isle of Wight. HMY ''Victoria and Albert'' was a royal yacht of the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom.
