Alfredo J. Mora
Alfredo José Mora Mercado (April 20, 1933, in Juana Díaz, Puerto Rico – November 1, 2001, in Ponce, Puerto Rico) was a lawyer and a high ranking officer who became the 10th Adjutant General of the Puerto Rico National Guard. In 1954 earned a B.A. in Arts from the University of Puerto Rico and a Doctorate in Law from University of Puerto Rico School of Law. He worked as law professor at the University of Puerto Rico School of Law and at the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico School of Law. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant to the United States Army in 1955 thru the Army ROTC program. Served two years on Active duty mostly in Europe. Joined the Puerto Rico National Guard on October 24, 1958. Went thru many positions in the Puerto Rico Guard until was named as commanding officer of the 92nd Infantry Brigade (Separate) on May 6, 1983. Juana Díaz, Puerto Rico
Juana Díaz (, ) is a town and municipality of Puerto Rico located in the southern coast of the island, south of Jayuya, Ciales, Orocovis and Villalba; east of Ponce; and west of Coamo and Santa Isabel and the Caribbean Sea to the south. Juana Díaz is spread over 13 barrios and Juana Diaz Pueblo (the downtown area and the administrative center of the city). It is part of the Ponce Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mameyes Landslide
The 1985 Puerto Rico floods produced the deadliest single landslide on record in North America, killing at least 130 people in the Mameyes neighborhood of barrio Portugués Urbano in Ponce. The floods were the result of a westward-moving tropical wave that emerged off the coast of Africa on September 29. The system moved into the Caribbean Sea on October 5 and produced torrential rainfall across Puerto Rico, peaking at in Toro Negro State Forest. Two stations broke their 24-hour rainfall records set in 1899. The rains caused severe flooding in the southern half of Puerto Rico, which isolated towns, washed out roads, and caused rivers to exceed their banks. In addition to the deadly landslide in Mameyes, the floods washed out a bridge in Santa Isabel that killed several people. William Miranda Marín
William "Willie" Miranda Marín (September 23, 1940 – June 4, 2010) was the mayor of Caguas, Puerto Rico, from 1997 until his death in 2010. Personal life The son of José Miranda Gómez, a sugar cane cutter, and Rafaela Marín, a tobacco stripper, Miranda Marín was born in the Tomás de Castro sector of rural Caguas. and graduated from the José Gautier Benítez High School in Caguas in 1957. Luis Ernesto González Vales (May 11, 1930 – October 21, 2023) was a Puerto Rican historian. He held the post of Official Historian of Puerto Rico, having succeeded Pilar Barbosa. Education A graduate of Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in history from the University of Puerto Rico, González Vales obtained his master's degree from the Columbia University of New York, where he also carried out doctoral courses. He was Professor of history of the University of Puerto Rico and Associate Dean of the Faculty of General Studies of the Río Piedras campus from the University of Puerto Rico.
