Alf Wilson (English Footballer)
Alfred Royle Wilson (1890 – after 1919) was an English professional footballer who played as a right back. Born in Wortley, near Sheffield, he played in the Football League for Birmingham between 1919 and 1920. Prior to the First World War, Wilson was on the books of Sheffield Wednesday and also appeared as a guest player for cross-town rivals Sheffield United during the conflict, making 43 wartime appearances for the club. Having also guested for Notts County and Birmingham during the war years, Wilson signed a permanent deal with Birmingham in 1919 as cover at full back. Alfred Wilson, Baron Wilson of Radcliffe (10 June 1909 – 25 January 1983) was a figure within the British co-operative movement and a Labour and Co-operative life peer. Biography The son of William Barnes Wilson and Jane Wilson, Alfred Wilson was educated at Technical School, Newcastle upon Tyne. He joined the Co-operative Wholesale Society in Newcastle in 1923, moving to the office of the Secretary in 1929. He became Deputy Secretary and Executive in 1953, Secretary in 1963, and Chief Executive Officer in 1969. He became the first chairman of the Co-operative Bank in 1971 and was appointed president of the Co-operative Congress for 1972. After his retirement as Chief Executive in 1974, Wilson was nominated for a life peerage in the October 1974 Dissolution Honours. Alfred Wilson (cricketer)
Alfred Wilson (24 May 1828 – 2 January 1908) was an English first-class cricketer and barrister. The son of James Wilson, he was born at London in May 1828. He was educated at Rugby School, before going up to Exeter College, Oxford. While studying at Oxford, he played first-class cricket for Oxford University, making his debut against the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in 1848. He played first-class cricket for Oxford until 1850, making eight appearances. In his eight first-class matches for Oxford, he scored 119 runs with a high score of 43 not out. In addition to playing for Oxford, Wilson also appeared in first-class cricket for the MCC on five occasions from 1851–55, scoring 107 runs with a high score of 28. A student of Lincoln's Inn, he was called to the bar as a barrister in November 1857. He was a justice of the peace for both Essex and Kent. Wilson died in January 1908 at East Preston, Sussex.
