Alfred Rappaport (diplomat)
Alfred Rappaport (16 June 1868 – 11 October 1946) was an Austria-Hungary, Austrian diplomat and writer. Rappaport was considered an authority on Balkans and Albanian affairs in the foreign ministry of Austria-Hungary. For his services he was ennobled by Franz Joseph I in 1916 and became known as Alfred Rappaport, Ritter von Arbengau. After the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire he retired and focused on publishing his works on the Balkans. Life Born the son of Eugen Rappaport, an Austrian Jewish businessman, Alfred converted to Roman Catholicism in 1883 and in 1900 joined the Oriental Academy. In 1893 he joined the staff of the Austro-Hungarian consulate of Shkodër and in October 1895 became vice-consul under Theodore Ippen. In Shkodër Rappaport learned Albanian and associated himself with Franz Nopcsa. From 1897 to 1899 he headed the vice-consulate of Prizren and from 1900 to 1903 the consulate of Baghdad. The Imperial Austrian Order of Franz Joseph (german: Kaiserlich-Österreichischer Franz-Joseph-Orden) was founded by Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria on 2 December 1849, on the first anniversary of his accession to the imperial throne. Classes The order was originally awarded in three classes: ''Grand Cross,'' ''Commander's Cross,'' and ''Knight's Cross.'' In 1869, the class of ''Commander with Star'' was added, which ranked immediately below the Grand Cross. The Order of the Black Eagle (german: Hoher Orden vom Schwarzen Adler) was the highest order of chivalry in the Kingdom of Prussia. The order was founded on 17 January 1701 by Elector Friedrich III of Brandenburg (who became Friedrich I, King in Prussia, the following day). In his Dutch exile after World War I, deposed Emperor Wilhelm II continued to award the order to his family. Today the Order of the Crown has been replaced by the Order of Merit of Savoy and is still conferred on new knights by the current head of the house of Vittorio Emanuele, Prince of Naples. The Royal Order of the Crown (german: Königlicher Kronen-Orden) was a Prussian order of chivalry. Instituted in 1861 as an honour equal in rank to the Order of the Red Eagle, membership could only be conferred upon commissioned officers (or civilians of approximately equivalent status), but there was a medal associated with the order which could be earned by non-commissioned officers and enlisted men. Officially the Order of the Red Eagle and the Order of the Crown were equal. Most officials did however prefer to be appointed in the older Order of the Red Eagle.
