Alfred Jackson (boxer)
Alfred Jackson (14 January 1896 – 13 February 1980) was a British boxer. He competed in the men's light heavyweight event at the 1928 Summer Olympics. In his first fight, he defeated Alf Cleverley of New Zealand, before losing to Karel Miljon of the Netherlands. 1928 Summer Olympics
The 1928 Summer Olympics ( nl, Olympische Zomerspelen 1928), officially known as the Games of the IX Olympiad ( nl, Spelen van de IXe Olympiade) and commonly known as Amsterdam 1928, was an international multi-sport event that was celebrated from 28 July to 12 August 1928 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The city of Amsterdam had previously bid for the 1920 and 1924 Olympic Games, but was obliged to give way to war-torn Antwerp in Belgium for the 1920 Games and Pierre de Coubertin's Paris for the 1924 Games. The only other candidate city for the 1928 Olympics was Los Angeles, which would eventually be selected to host the Olympics four years later. In preparation for the 1932 Summer Olympics, the United States Olympic Committee reviewed the costs and revenue of the 1928 Games. The committee reported a total cost of US$1.183 million with receipts of US$1.165 million, giving a negligible loss of US$18,000, which was a considerable improvement over the 1924 Games. Alf Cleverley
Alfred John Cleverley (18 September 1907 – 2 August 1992) was a New Zealand boxer from Petone. He competed in the New Zealand at the 1928 Summer Olympics, 1928 Olympics in the men's light-heavyweight section, but lost on points in the first round to Alf Jackson of Great Britain. After the Olympics he competed in the Tailtean Games in Dublin then fought professionally in Long Beach, California. He returned to New Zealand in 1930, married, and resumed work at the Railways Workshops at Petone Workshops, Petone then at the Hutt Workshops, Hutt as a fitter. Karel Miljon
Karel Leendert Miljon (17 September 1903, Amsterdam – 8 February 1984, Bennebroek) was a Dutch boxer, who won the bronze medal in the light heavyweight division at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam. England Boxing, known until 2013 as the Amateur Boxing Association of England, is the governing body of amateur boxing clubs in England. There are separate organisations for Scotland and Wales with boxing in Northern Ireland being organised on an All-Ireland basis. The Association was founded in 1880. In 1881, it organised the first ABA Championships the following year. From 2008 the Championships were known as the ABAE National Championships and then from 2014 until 2018 they were known as the England Boxing National Elite Championships. The British Newspaper Archive web site provides access to searchable digitized archives of British and Irish newspapers. It was launched in November 2011. History The British Library Newspapers section was based in Colindale in north London, until 2013, and is now divided between the St Pancras and Boston Spa sites. The library has an almost complete collection of British and Irish newspapers since 1840. This is partly because of the legal deposit legislation of 1869, which required newspapers to supply a copy of each edition of a newspaper to the library. London editions of national daily and Sunday newspapers are complete back to 1801. In total, the collection consists of 660,000 bound volumes and 370,000 reels of microfilm containing tens of millions of newspapers with 52,000 titles on 45 km of shelves.
