Alfred Ernest Harding (1861–1942) was an independent conservative Member of Parliament in New Zealand. New Zealand Liberal Party
The New Zealand Liberal Party was the first organised political party in New Zealand. It governed from 1891 until 1912. The Liberal strategy was to create a large class of small land-owning farmers who supported Liberal ideals, by buying large tracts of Māori land and selling it to small farmers on credit. The Liberal Government also established the basis of the later welfare state, with old age pensions, developed a system for settling industrial disputes, which was accepted by both employers and trade unions. In 1893 it extended voting rights to women, making New Zealand the first country in the world to enact universal adult suffrage. John Stallworthy
John Stallworthy (1854 – 10 November 1923) was a Liberal Party Member of Parliament in New Zealand. He was a teacher, newspaper editor, and sawmiller's trade union leader. He was born in Samoa in 1854; his father George was a member of the London Missionary Society. He received his education at Blackheath Proprietary School in London. He came to New Zealand in 1872 in the ship ''City of Auckland''. His first job was at a sawmill in Whangaroa. He was employed by the Auckland Education Board from 1878, and worked at a school in Newmarket. In 1880, he was placed at Aratapu School in Hobson County, Northland. Aratapu is today a small settlement on the west bank of the Wairoa River, a short distance downstream from Dargaville, but back then economically as important as Dargaville if not ahead. New Liberal Party (New Zealand)
The New Liberal Party of New Zealand was a splinter group of the original Liberal Party. It was formed at a meeting in the Christchurch suburb of Papanui in June 1905 by two Liberal-aligned independents who sought a more "progressive" policy than that followed by the Liberal leader, Richard Seddon, and was similar to the Radical Party in 1896. Harry Bedford (politician)
Harry Dodgshun Bedford (31 August 1877 – 17 February 1918) was a New Zealand university academic and Member of Parliament for the City of Dunedin. Biography Early life Bedford was born in Hunslet, a suburb of Leeds, Yorkshire, England, in 1877. Alongside his four sisters and together with their mother, they emigrated to Invercargill in 1886 to reunite with his father. He received further education at Clifton School and left after Standard 6 (year 8) to work for his father's tailoring business. He completed a PhD at the University of Otago in 1916, with a thesis on the history of banking in New Zealand. He later became a professor of history and economics at the University of Otago in Dunedin. He married Ella Brown in 1907. One of their four children, John Dodgshun Bedford (born 1916), was the father of the human geographer Richard Bedford. Francis Fisher
Francis Marion Bates Fisher (22 December 1877 – 24 July 1960) was a New Zealand Member of Parliament from Wellington. He was known as Rainbow Fisher for his frequent changes of political allegiance. He was a veteran of the Boer War and an internationally successful tennis player becoming the champion, along with his mixed doubles partner, Irene Peacock, of the World Covered Court Championships in 1920. Early life and family Fisher was the son of George Fisher, a member of parliament and Mayor of Wellington. David Fisher was his uncle. ''The Evening Post'' (8 February 1865 – 6 July 2002) was an afternoon metropolitan daily newspaper based in Wellington, New Zealand. It was founded in 1865 by Dublin-born printer, newspaper manager and leader-writer Henry Blundell, who brought his large family to New Zealand in 1863.
