Alfred Davies (14 October 1848 – 27 September 1907), was a British Liberal Party politician and businessman. Davies founded the British freight forwarding company Davies Turner in 1870 which claimed in 2013 to be the largest independent freight forwarding company operating in Great Britain. Background Alfred Davies was the fourth son of Rev. John Davies, a Welsh Congregational Minister in London. His father was a farmer's son from Penygraig, Carmarthenshire, who had commenced preaching at sixteen, and progressed from Carmarthen Grammar School and the nonconformist Academy at Newport Pagnall to be the minister of Albany Chapel, Regent's Park, and Marsh- street, Walthamstow. His mother, Mary Kidman Foster, belonged to a prominent nonconformist family in Cambridgeshire,. He was educated at Mill Hill School and at Rickmansworth. Alfred Davies (1850 – 6 April 1891) was a Welsh amateur footballer who played most of his football career with Wrexham, with whom he won the inaugural Welsh Cup in 1878. Playing at outside-left, he also made two appearances for Wales in 1876 and 1877. Football career Born in Wrexham, Davies was a keen cricketer and a member of the Wrexham Cricket Club. On 28 September 1872, in search of a sporting activity for the winter months, he attended a meeting held at the Turf Hotel in Wrexham, which led to the formation of the Wrexham Association Football Club. In the early days of Wrexham Football Club, the teams would field as many as 16 players with the goal-posts being connected by a tape. Alfred Davies (civil Servant)
Sir Alfred Thomas Davies, KBE, CB, DL, JP (11 March 1861 – 21 April 1949) was a British civil servant, solicitor and local politician. Born on 11 March 1861 at Liverpool, he attended the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, before practising as a solicitor in Liverpool from 1883 to 1907. In the meantime, he was involved in the temperance movement and sat on local government committees. From 1904 to 1907, he was a councillor on the Denbighshire County Council. Having been a member of that council's education committee, he was appointed the Permanent Secretary of the newly established Welsh Department in the national Board of Education.
