Alfred Daniel Jones
Alfred Daniel Jones or Buck Jones(July 3, 1857 – December 9, 1893) was an American politician who served in North Carolina and as Consulate General of the United States, Shanghai, Consul General of the United States in Shanghai. Early life Jones was born in Wake County, North Carolina, the son of Mary Elizabeth Courts and Wesley Jones. His paternal grandfather was Nathaniel Jones who arrived in the area of what is now eastern Cary, North Carolina around 1775 and owned 10,461 acres, including his White Plains plantation. His maternal grandfather was Daniel D. Courts, Esq. He studied law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While there, he was a member of the Dialectic Society. At commencement on June 7, 1877, he gave a speech about the importance of normal institutes called "The Teacher Must be Taught," receiving applause several times during the speech. The Consulate General of the United States in Shanghai is one of the six American diplomatic and consular posts in the People's Republic of China. First established in 1844 following the signing of the Treaty of Wanghia, the U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai had a presence until the conclusion of the Chinese Communist Revolution and it closed in 1950. It reopened in 1980 at its present location at 1469 Huai Hai Zhong Road (at the corner with Urumqi Road) in an early 20th-century mansion. The Consulate General has two other offices in Shanghai. Octavius Coke
Octavius Coke (October 4, 1840 – August 30, 1895) was an American lawyer and politician. A Democrat, he served in the North Carolina Senate and as North Carolina Secretary of State from 1891 to 1895. Born in Virginia, he read law and opened a legal practice in Williamsburg before enlisting in the Confederate States Army. He quickly attained the rank of captain and was wounded several times throughout the war. After the conflict ended he established a law practice in Edenton, North Carolina. Taking an interest in politics, Coke was elected as a Democrat to serve in the North Carolina Senate in 1876. In 1880 he moved to Raleigh where he remained active in Democratic politics. Matthew Whitaker Ransom (October 8, 1826October 8, 1904) was a general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War and a Democratic U.S. senator from the state of North Carolina between 1872 and 1895. ''Saikyō Maru'' (西京丸) was a steamship that was built in 1888 in Scotland for Japanese merchant service. She was requisitioned for service in the First Sino-Japanese War of 1894–95 and the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–05. She was scrapped in 1927. The Knights of Pythias is a fraternal organization and secret society founded in Washington, D.C., on . The Knights of Pythias is the first fraternal organization to receive a charter under an act of the United States Congress. It was founded by Justus H.
