Alfred Compigne
Alfred William Compigne (February 7, 1818 – July 4, 1909) was a settler and politician of Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Early life Alfred William Compigné was born at Gosport, Hampshire, England on 2 February 1818. He immigrated to Sydney, New South Wales on 30 June 1839, coming to Queensland in 1846. Alfred Compigné acquired Nindooinbah Station on the Albert River and was the first pastoralist to take up land on the coast south of Coomera. He applied successfully for the leasehold of two properties to the south of Brisbane settlement being Dungogie and Murry Jerry runs in March 1852. Just five months later in August 1952 he transferred the coastal runs to William Duckett White of Beaudesert Station. In his footnotes regarding Compigne, Longhurst accounts that while Compigne ran up to 7,000 sheep on Nindooinbah Station he eventually failed as a squatter. Queensland Legislative Council
The Queensland Legislative Council was the upper house of the parliament in the Australian state of Queensland. It was a fully nominated body which first took office on 1 May 1860. It was abolished by the Constitution Amendment Act 1921, which took effect on 23 March 1922. Consequently, the Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the only unicameral state Parliament in Australia. Two territories, the Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory, also maintain unicameral parliaments. Most of the early members of the Council came from wealthy families, were well educated and were born in England. Absenteeism was a problem in the early years, with some members returning to England, being absent for several years. William Duckett White
William Duckett White (1807–1893) was a squatter and politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Early life William White was born into a large Quaker family on 5 October 1807 in Moate, County Westmeath, Ireland and was educated at the Quaker school in Mountmellick in County Laois. In 1835 William married Jane Simpson from Cork. Pastoral career William and Jane White and their two children emigrated from Ireland to Sydney as assisted immigrants in 1840. When he arrived in Australia, William assumed his grandmother's maiden name as a second Christian name, and became known thereafter as William Duckett White. From 1842-44 White taught school in the Mangrove area north of Sydney until accepting an offer in 1845 to manage the Beau Desert pastoral run in the Moreton Bay District for his cousin Joseph Phelps Robinson. This is a list of members of the Queensland Legislative Council from its creation on 1 May 1860 to 31 December 1869. Appointments, made by the Governor of Queensland, were for life, although many members for one reason or another resigned. Prior to 1860, Queensland was part of the colony of New South Wales. Starting with 11 members, by 26 April 1861, the council had increased to 21 members. From then until the end of the decade, the mean membership was slightly over 20, ranging from 16–17 for a period from July 1865 to February 1866, to 23–24 for a period from July 1863 to April 1864.
