Alfred C. Malchiodi
Alfred C. Malchiodi (1942–2011) was a noted American engineer specializing in submarines. Biography Malchiodi was born July 18, 1942, in New London, the son of the late Alfred and Josephine (Donatello) Malchiodi. After graduating from New London High School, he attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute, graduating with a degree in electrical engineering in 1964. Malchiodi married Tillie Oppido on June 1, 1968. He was employed by Electric Boat for over 40 years as an electrical engineer. After working on the USS Narwhal (SSN-671), USS Glenard P. Lipscomb (SSN-685) and NR-1 Deep Submergence Craft, he became Chief Engineer for the Trident Program and USS Memphis (SSN-691), then Director of Engineering for Virginia class submarines. On retirement he was Director of Submarine Concept Formulation. In 2000, he received the General Dynamics Technology Excellence Award. Deep Submergence Vessel ''NR-1'' was a unique United States Navy (USN) nuclear-powered ocean engineering and research submarine, built by the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics at Groton, Connecticut. ''NR-1'' was launched on 25 January 1969, completed initial sea trials 19 August 1969, and was home-ported at Naval Submarine Base New London. ''NR-1'' was the smallest nuclear submarine ever put into operation. The vessel was casually known as "Nerwin" and was never officially named or commissioned. Lung cancer, also known as lung carcinoma (since about 98–99% of all lung cancers are carcinomas), is a malignant lung tumor characterized by uncontrolled cell growth in tissue (biology), tissues of the lung. New London is a seaport city and a port of entry on the northeast coast of the United States, located at the mouth of the Thames River in New London County, Connecticut.
