Alf Palmer
Alf Palmer (–1981), or in his native language, was the last native speaker of the Australian aboriginal language Warrungu. He lived in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. Palm Island is a locality consisting of an island group of 16 islands, split between the Shire of Hinchinbrook and the Aboriginal Shire of Palm Island, in Queensland, Australia. Warrungu Language
Warrongo (or War(r)ungu) is an Australian Aboriginal language, one of the dozen languages of the Maric branch of the Pama–Nyungan family. It was formerly spoken by the Warrongo people in the area around Townsville, Queensland, Australia. Its last native speaker was Alf Palmer, who died in 1981. Before his death, linguists Tasaku Tsunoda and Peter Sutton worked together with Palmer to preserve the language (Warrungu proper); thanks to their efforts, the language is beginning to be revived. One of the notable feature of the language is its syntactic ergativity. As noted by Ethnologue, the language is currently dormant meaning that there are no native/proficient speakers left. Tasaku Tsunoda
is a Japanese linguist, specializing in Australian Aboriginal languages. His interests embrace linguistic typology and endangered languages. Career Tsunoda was born in Akagi, Gumma Prefecture (now incorporated with other villages and renamed Shibukawa) in 1946. On graduating from Tokyo University, Tsunoda moved to Monash University in Melbourne where he completed a master's and then a doctoral degree in linguistics. His choice of Melbourne for postgraduate work was partially influenced by the fact that the Monash campus was close to an athletic training camp run by the former world middle distance champion Herb Elliott. His supervisor for both his M.A. and PhD was Barry Blake.
