Alexia Pickering
Alexia Helen Jean Rae Pickering (née Pilcher; 20 May 1930 – 27 April 2017) was a leading New Zealand disabilities rights campaigner. Early life and family She was born with spina bifida in Petone in 1930. Aged 10 months, she was operated on by orthopaedic surgeon Alexander Gillies, and they became life-long friends. Her early education was at home or via correspondence. She was head girl at Patea School and won a scholarship to St Mary's Diocesan School, Stratford, St Mary's School in Stratford, New Zealand, Stratford, but they would not take her because of her disability. She attended Hawera High School instead. In the 1950s she married Neville Pickering, who went on serve as a New Zealand Parliament, Member of Parliament (1957–1960) and mayor of Christchurch (1971–74). Petone
Petone (Māori: ''Pito-one''), a large suburb of Lower Hutt, Wellington, stands at the southern end of the Hutt Valley, on the northern shore of Wellington Harbour. The Māori name means "end of the sand beach". Europeans first settled in Petone in 1840, making it one of the oldest European settlements in the Wellington Region. It became a borough in 1888, and merged with Lower Hutt (branded as "Hutt City") in 1989. Geography Petone is flat. It is nestled between the Hutt River to the north and east, hills on the west and Wellington Harbour to the south. The land along the Petone foreshore was uplifted by a metre or more after the 1855 Wairarapa earthquake. This improved drainage around the mouth of the Hutt River. The New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal was a commemorative medal awarded in New Zealand in 1990 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, and was awarded to approximately 3,000 people.
