Alexandre Eremenko
Alexandre Eremenko (born 1954 in Kharkiv, Ukraine; ua, Олександр Емануїлович Єременко, transcription: Olexandr Emanuilowitsch Jeremenko) is a Ukrainian-American mathematician who works in the fields of complex analysis and dynamical systems. He is a grandnephew of a Marshal of the Soviet Union Andrey Yeryomenko. Academic career Eremenko was born into a medical family. His father Emmanuel Berger was a pathophysiologist, professor and head of the Department of pathophysiology at Ternopil National Medical University. His mother Neonila Eremenko was an ophthalmologist. He obtained his master's degree from Lviv University in 1976 and worked in the Institute of Low temperature physics and Engineering in Kharkiv until 1990. Escaping Set
In mathematics, and particularly complex dynamics, the escaping set of an entire function ƒ consists of all points that tend to infinity under the repeated application of ƒ. That is, a complex number z_0\in\mathbb belongs to the escaping set if and only if the sequence defined by z_ := f(z_n) converges to infinity as n gets large. The escaping set of f is denoted by I(f). For example, for f(z)=e^z, the origin belongs to the escaping set, since the sequence :0,1,e,e^e,e^,\dots tends to infinity. Paul Eremenko ( uk, Єременко Павло Олександрович; born 1979 in Lviv, Soviet Union) is a Ukrainian American innovator and technology executive. He was formerly the Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President of United Technologies Corporation. Gravity Train
A gravity train is a theoretical means of transportation for purposes of commuting between two points on the surface of a sphere, by following a straight tunnel connecting the two points through the interior of the sphere. In a large body such as a planet, this train could be left to accelerate using just the force of gravity, since during the first half of the trip (from the point of departure until the middle), the downward pull towards the center of gravity would pull it towards the destination. During the second half of the trip, the acceleration would be in the opposite direction relative to the trajectory, but, ignoring the effects of friction, the speed acquired before would be exactly enough to overcome this deceleration, and as a result, the train's speed would reach zero at precisely the moment the train reached its destination. The American Mathematical Society (AMS) is an association of professional mathematicians dedicated to the interests of mathematical research and scholarship, and serves the national and international community through its publications, meetings, advocacy and other programs. The society is one of the four parts of the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics and a member of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences. A fellow is a concept whose exact meaning depends on context. In learned or professional societies, it refers to a privileged member who is specially elected in recognition of their work and achievements.
