Alexander Stepanovich Yakovlev
Alexander Stepanovich Yakovlev (russian: Алекса́ндр Степа́нович Я́ковлев) (23 November 1886 – 4 November 1953) was a Russian/Soviet writer. Biography Yakovlev was born into the family of a house painter in the town of Volsk. He fought in World War 1. His works concentrate on the lives of working-class people. Yakovlev is credited with being one of the first writers to depict the Russian Revolution of 1917 on a broad canvas in his novel ''October'' (1918). He was the author of many novels, including ''Fires in the Field'' (1934–35) and ''Steps'' (1940), and a number of stories and essays. He also chronicled the rescue attempts made on the expeditions of Nobile and Roald Amundsen, in which he took part. Alexandre Yevgenievich Jacovleff (also spelt Iacovleff or Yakovlev, russian: Александр Евгеньевич Яковлев; – 12 May 1938) was a neoclassicist painter, draughtsman, designer and etcher. Biography Alexandre was the son of a naval officer from Saint Petersburg, where he was born. Between 1905 and 1913 he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts under Kardovsky. While a student he enjoyed drawing and worked for the art magazines Apollon, Satiricon, Niva, Novyi Satirikon (New Satiricon). After 1912, Jacovleff was a member of Mir Iskusstva. Jacovleff's large group portrait ''On Academic Dacha'' was exhibited at the ''Baltic Exhibition'' in Malmö in 1912, and received praise from the critics, including Alexandre Benois. Alexander Sergeyevich Yakovlev (russian: Алекса́ндр Серге́евич Я́ковлев; 22 August 1989) was a Soviet aeronautical engineer. He designed the Yakovlev military aircraft and founded the Yakovlev Design Bureau. Yakovlev joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1938. Biography Yakovlev was born in Moscow, where his father was an employee of the Nobel Brothers oil company. From 1919 to 1921 he worked as a part-time courier while still in school, and in 1922 he built his first model airplane as part of a school project. In 1924, he built a glider, the AVF-10, which made its first flight on 24 September 1924. The design won an award, and secured him a position as a worker at the Zhukovsky Air Force Military Engineering Academy. Alexander Nikolayevich Yakovlev (russian: Алекса́ндр Никола́евич Я́ковлев; 2 December 1923 – 18 October 2005) was a Soviet and Russian politician, diplomat, and historian. A member of the Politburo and Secretariat of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union throughout the 1980s, he was termed the "godfather of glasnost", and was the intellectual force behind Mikhail Gorbachev's reform programme of glasnost and perestroika. Born into a rural family, Yakovlev served as a platoon commander of a marine brigade during World War II, and became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union following the war. During the rule of Nikita Khrushchev, he became a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU, before resigning to study abroad as part of the Fulbright Programme, returning in 1960.
