Aleksandr Iosifovich Popov
Aleksandr Iosifovich Popov (russian: Алекса́ндр Ио́сифович Попо́в; 7 June 1913 in Tartu, Dorpat, Governorate of Livonia, Russian Empire – 23 April 1993 in Moscow, Russia) was a Soviet Union, Soviet permafrost researcher at the Moscow State University. He served as head of the Department of Cryolithology and Glaciology. Popov was a member of the International Commission on periglaciation, Periglacial Morphology of the International Geographical Union. He organized and led numerous expeditions to investigate permafrost and deep seasonal freezing in the Soviet Union. Alexander Alexandrovich Popov (russian: Алекса́ндр Алекса́ндрович Попо́в; born 31 August 1980) is a Russian professional ice hockey forward who currently plays for HC CSKA Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He previously played his whole professional career for Avangard Omsk Hockey Club Avangard (russian: ХК Авангард, links=no, Vanguard), also known as Avangard Omsk, is a Russian professional ice hockey team from Omsk. Alexander Popov (born 3 February 1942) is an Australian architect working in the Late 20th Century Modern style. Biography Popov was born in Shanghai of Russian parents and moved to Sydney aged twelve. He was educated at Newington College (1958-1960) and the University of New South Wales before studying further in Denmark. Alexander Nikiforovich Popov (russian: Александр Никифорович Попов 1840 – 18 August 1881) was a Russian organic chemist. He taught chemistry at the University of Kazan and at the University of Warsaw. He discovered what is now called Popov's Rule (or Popoff's Rule) which states that in the oxidation of a unsymmetrical ketone, the cleavage of the C−CO bond so that the smaller alkyl group is retained. Popov was born in Vitebsk where his father was a military officer. He studied at Kazan University and attended the chemistry lectures of A.M. Butlerov. Graduating in 1865 he worked as a chemical lab assistant and in 1868 received a master's degree and became a professor at the University of Warsaw. In 1871 he went to work in Bonn with August Kekulé and E.K. Theodor Zinkce. Aleksandr Vladimirovich Popov (Russian: Алекса́ндр Влади́мирович Попо́в, born 16 November 1971), better known as Alexander Popov, is a former Russian swimmer. Widely considered the greatest sprint swimmer in history, Popov won gold in the 50-metre and 100 m freestyle at the 1992 Olympics and repeated the feat at the 1996 Olympics, and is the only male in Olympic games history to defend both titles.
