Alexander Robert Lindsay, 29th Earl Of Crawford
Robert Alexander Lindsay, 29th Earl of Crawford and 12th Earl of Balcarres, (born 5 March 1927), styled Lord Balniel between 1940 and 1975, is a Scottish hereditary peer and Conservative politician who was a Member of Parliament from 1955 to 1974. The elder son of the 28th Earl of Crawford and 11th Earl of Balcarres, he succeeded to the family titles in 1975. Lord Crawford and Balcarres is the Premier Earl of Scotland and Chief of Clan Lindsay. Following the death of Lord Eden of Winton on 23 May 2020, Lindsay became the surviving former MP with the earliest date of first election, having first entered Parliament at the 1955 general election. Alexander Lindsay (East India Company Officer)
General Sir Alexander Lindsay KCB (14 January 178522 January 1872) was an officer in both the British and East India Company armies. Commissioned into the British Army at the age of nine, he was placed on half-pay after the 104th Regiment of Foot (Royal Manchester Volunteers) was disbanded in 1795. After passing out from the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, Lindsay joined the Bengal Army of the East India Company as an artillery officer in 1804. He served in a number of sieges and on campaign in Bundelkhand before joining David Ochterlony's army in the 1814–16 Anglo-Nepalese War, in which he was wounded in the hand and leg. Lindsay recovered to fight in the 1817–18 Third Anglo-Maratha War and later had responsibility for telegraphs and gunpowder manufacture in part of Bengal. Alexander Lindsay of Evelick (c. 1561 – 1639), was a Church of Scotland minister who rose to be Bishop of Dunkeld. Life He was second son of John Lindsay, laird of Evelick. He graduated MA at St Leonard's College, St Andrews, and spent some time as a "regent" (the equivalent of a Fellow of the college. In October 1591 Lindsay was ordained as minister of St Madoes church in Perthshire. He was elected Constant Moderator in 1606 but served only one year as he was chosen as to be Bishop of Dunkeld on 21 December 1607. On 27 January 1624, he was admitted to the Scottish Privy Council. He assisted in the coronation of King Charles I in 1633. He was hostile to the introduction of the Book of Common Prayer in 1637 and, contrary to royal policy, favoured a reduced role for bishops.
