Alexander Hutchison (1943–2015)
Alexander Norman Hutchison (20 October 1943 – 22 November 2015) was a Scottish poet with Canadian citizenship whose professional career included spells in Canada, the USA, and Scotland. Life and career Alexander Hutchison (known as "Sandy") was born in Buckie in the North East of Scotland, the son of Margaret and Gordon Hutchison. In 1966, after graduating from the University of Aberdeen with a joint MA Honours degree in English Literature and Psychology, he took up a teaching post at the University of Victoria in Canada. In 1967 he lived for a while in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco, a city he returned to in the 1970s and early 1980s. In the early 70s he took leave of absence from the University of Victoria to study for a PhD at Northwestern University in Chicago which he was awarded in 1975, thesis title: ''The Context of Illumination in the Poetry of Theodore Roethke''. Alexander Hutchison (1838–1917)
Alexander Hutchison (1838 – 1 August 1917) was a Scottish-born Australian politician. He was born at Kilmarnock in Ayrshire. He was educated at Galston and in 1859 went to Glasgow to work for a publishing firm, before moving to Bristol in 1864 to start his own business. On 23 January 1857 he married Martha Bryce, with whom he had three children. He migrated to New South Wales in 1876, establishing a publishing firm at Maitland, which eventually had branches in Sydney, Newcastle, Tamworth and Tinonee. In 1887 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as a Free Trade member for Canterbury, serving until 1891. Alexander Hutchison (1838–1908)
Alexander Hutchison (1838 – 24 August 1908) was a Scottish-born Australian politician. He was born in Dumfries to farmers Peter and Janet Hutchison. He was a builder, and around 1863 married Agnes Potter, with whom he had eight children. He arrived in New South Wales around 1880. In 1889 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Protectionist member for Glen Innes, holding the seat until his defeat in 1894. Alexander Copland Hutchison
Alexander Copland (or Copeland) Hutchison FRSE (1786–1840) was a British surgeon and medical author remembered for his book ''Practical Observations in Surgery'' (1811). In 1818 he made an interesting observation that navy personnel suffered exceptionally low levels of kidney stones (Urinary calculi) totalling eight cases over a 15-year period (1800–1815) within a minimum of 145,000 subjects per year. Taking all factors into account he calculated a total rate of approximately 1 in 11,000. Whilst the data was clear the cause was not. It was largely ascribed to the very high proportion of salt beef and pork within the diet, and the rather unattractive issue of sleeping in one’s own sweat within your hammock. Oddly, the study seemed to believe that naval diet destroyed the inevitability of kidney stones, rather than considering that naval diet excluded the causes of kidney stones (being very low in dairy products). Alexander Richard Hamilton Hutchison
General Sir Alexander Richard Hamilton Hutchison, (2 August 1871 – 1930) was a Royal Marines officer who served as Adjutant-General Royal Marines. Background and family Hutchison was the second son of Colonel F. J. Hutchison, 84th Regiment, and was born in Colombo, Ceylon, where his father was stationed at the time of his birth in 1871. He married at Holy Trinity Church, Gosport, on 7 January 1903, Georgina Courtenay (Daisy) Haswell, from Gosport, eldest daughter of W. H. Haswell, Fleet Paymaster in the Royal Navy. Military career Hutchison was commissioned into the Royal Marine Light Infantry on 28 March 1890. Promoted to captain on 6 December 1897, he fought in the Second Boer War. Alex Hutchison
Alexander Hutchison (1864 – 1928) was a Scottish trade union leader who served as chair of the General Federation of Trade Unions (GFTU). Born in Falkirk, Hutchison began working at the age of eight, later becoming an iron moulder. An early member of the National Union of Stove Grate and General Metal Workers, he became secretary of his local branch in 1893. He also joined the Independent Labour Party, and became a vocal advocate of women's suffrage. In 1908, Hutchison became a full-time organiser for the Stove Grate Workers, and then in 1909 was elected as the union's general secretary.
