Alexander Henry Boswell MacGowan
Alexander Henry Boswall MacGowan (April 14, 1850 – April 23, 1927) was a businessman and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Vancouver City from 1903 to 1916 in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia as a Conservative. His name also appears as Alexander Henry Boswell MacGowan in some sources. He was born on Prince Edward Island, the son of William Stainforth MacGowan and Ann Burston Boswall, and was educated there. His grandfather Peter Magowan had served as attorney general for Prince Edward Island. MacGowan became involved in the businesses of shipping and insurance. In 1874, he married Frances M. Hayden. MacGowan came to Vancouver in 1888. British Columbia Conservative Party
The Conservative Party of British Columbia is a provincial political party in British Columbia, Canada. In the early half of the 20th century, the Conservatives competed with the British Columbia Liberal Party for power in the province. Since the 1950s however, the party has had only a minor presence, not having elected a member of the Legislative Assembly (or MLA) in a general election since 1975. The last sitting MLA for the Conservatives was John van Dongen, who briefly crossed the floor to the party in 2012 before leaving to sit as an independent. Vancouver City (electoral District)
Vancouver City was a provincial electoral district in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It was a multiple member riding based in the newly created city of Vancouver. It did not appear on the hustings until the 1890 election - the city only having been chartered and named in the year of the previous election when the locality was a small polling area of the New Westminster (provincial electoral district) riding. It is a sign of Vancouver's rapid growth that by 1890 there were over 300 electors, by 1900 there were 15,000, by 1903 over 25,000 votes cast; prior to 1885 the population of the waterside village of Granville, B.I. (Burrard Inlet, a postal address shared by Moodyville, New Brighton and Barnet) had been in the range of 300. Peter Magowan (lawyer)
Peter Magowan (March 22, 1762 – June 19, 1810) was a lawyer and political figure in Prince Edward Island. He represented Kings County, Prince Edward Island, Kings County in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1790 to 1810. His surname also appears as McGowan or Macgowan. Born in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, (the Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online states that he may have been a native of Ireland) Magowan was educated in England and was admitted to practice as an attorney of the King's Bench in 1782. In 1788, he married Ann Stainforth. He immigrated to St. John's Island (later Prince Edward Island) in 1789 from London. He was first elected to the colony's assembly in 1790.
