Alexander Henry (gunsmith)
Alexander Henry (1818–1894) was a Scottish gun maker, based in Edinburgh, and designer of the Henry rifling and barrel used in the Martini–Henry rifle. He submitted a rifle to the competition organised by the British government for a replacement for their existing Snider–Enfield service weapon. His breech action and barrel were both judged to be the best (and won the prizes). The War Office did not adopt its action, preferring that of Friedrich von Martini, but did adopt its seven-grooved barrel rifling scheme. The resulting Martini-Henry rifle is named after von Martini and himself. Alexander Henry (April 14, 1823 – December 6, 1883) was an American politician who served three terms as List of mayors of Philadelphia, mayor of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1858 to 1865. He was elected as a member of the People's Party (United States), People's Party but served his second and third terms as a member of the Republican Party (United States), Republican Party. He implemented major increases and improvements to the Philadelphia Police Department. During the American Civil War, he was a staunch supporter of the Union (American Civil War), Union but worked to suppress violence against Confederate States of America, Confederate sympathizers in the city and helped organize civilians to assist in constructing earthworks to defend the city during the 1863 Gettysburg Campaign. Alexander Lawrence Henry (born October 18, 1979) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman who most recently played for the Dutch team HYS The Hague from The Hague. He played 177 games in the NHL with the Edmonton Oilers, Washington Capitals, Minnesota Wild and Montreal Canadiens. Playing career Henry was selected in the 3rd round, 67th overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers from the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. Henry played his first professional season in the 1999–00 season with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the AHL. Henry made his NHL debut with the Oilers in the 2002–03 season, playing in only three games before he was placed on waivers to be claimed by the Washington Capitals on October 24, 2002. CCGS ''Alexander Henry'' is a former Canadian Coast Guard light icebreaker and buoy tender that served on the Great Lakes from 1959 to 1984. In 1986, the vessel was handed over to the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes in Kingston, Ontario for preservation as a museum ship. Previously, during the summer months the vessel was also operated as a bed and breakfast. In 2017, the ship was sold to the Lakehead Transportation Museum Society in Thunder Bay, Ontario and in June, was relocated to the Pool 6 site on the town's harbour front, where ''Alexander Henry'' continues as a museum ship. Alexander Henry (1783 – 4 October 1862) was a British Radical politician. Life Alexander Henry of Woodlands, near Manchester, England, was born in County Down. He moved to England in 1804, and with his brother Samuel, established ''A & S Henry & Co Ltd'', a dealer in cotton. The firm was very successful, having branches in Huddersfield and elsewhere and they became very wealthy. Samuel Henry used to travel to Alabama to buy cotton. He died in 1840 when the steamship ''Lexington'' caught fire and sank in Long Island Sound. Alexander was a member of the Cross Street congregation, a Unitarian chapel. He married Elizabeth, daughter of George Brush of Willowbrook, Killinchy, County Down. Henry was active in the postal reform movement and a supporter of the Anti-Corn Law League.
