Alexander Hay (Australian Politician)
Alexander Hay (8 January 1865 – 8 May 1941) was a New Zealand-born Australian pastoralist, businessman and politician. He was a member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1919 to 1922, representing the electorate of New England for the Nationalist Party (1919–1920), Country Party (1920–1921) and as an independent (1921–1922). Hay was born at Parua Bay in New Zealand and was educated at Auckland Grammar School. He migrated to Australia in 1893 and visited England for the purposes of importing cattle in 1894. His brother, Sir John Hay, had inherited the substantial Berry Estate and Coolangatta Estate following the death of his cousin, David Berry, and in 1895 Alexander Hay joined his brother in managing the estates. They undertook a significant development project which saw about 400 freeholders settled onto the land, while retaining the Coolangatta Homestead as their own. Division Of New England
The Division of New England is an Australian electoral division in the state of New South Wales. History The division was proclaimed in 1900, and was one of the original 65 divisions to be contested at the first federal election. It is named after the New England region in northern New South Wales. From 1922 to 2001, New England was usually regarded as a comfortably safe seat for the National Party, formerly the Country Party. Only one Labor candidate has ever won the seat – Frank Foster at the 1906 election and again at the 1910 election, both times on small margins. Since then, the closest Labor has come to winning the seat was in the 1943 landslide, when the Country majority was pared back to an extremely marginal 1.1 percent. It was a marginal seat for most of the 1980s, but since the 1990s Labor has been lucky to get 40 percent of the two-party vote, and has frequently been pushed into third place. ''The Herald'' was a morning and, later, evening broadsheet newspaper published in Melbourne, Australia, from 3 January 1840 to 5 October 1990, which is when it merged with its sister morning newspaper ''The Sun News-Pictorial'' to form the ''Herald-Sun''. An independent or non-partisan politician is a politician not affiliated with any political party or bureaucratic association. There are numerous reasons why someone may stand for office as an independent. Some politicians have political views that do not align with the platforms of any political party, and therefore choose not to affiliate with them. Billy Hughes
William Morris Hughes (25 September 1862 – 28 October 1952) was an Australian politician who served as the seventh prime minister of Australia, in office from 1915 to 1923. He is best known for leading the country during World War I, but his influence on national politics spanned several decades. Hughes was a member of federal parliament from Federation in 1901 until his death, the only person to have served for more than 50 years. He represented six political parties during his career, leading five, outlasting four, and being expelled from three. Hughes was born in London to Welsh parents. He emigrated to Australia at the age of 22, and became involved in the fledgling Australian labour movement. ''The Nowra Leader'' was an English language newspaper published between 1909 and 1969 in Nowra, New South Wales, Australia. It continued ''The Leader and Shoalhaven District Newspaper'' and was merged with the ''Nowra and Shoalhaven News'' to form the ''Nowra News Leader''. History ''The Leader and Shoalhaven District Newspaper'' was founded by Thomas Charles Kennedy. It was first published in 1893 and ceased publication on 27 August 1909. It was continued by ''The Nowra Leader'', which was launched on 3 September 1909 by publisher Herbert James Connolly. After Connolly's death in 1944, his sister Florence A. Connolly ran the paper until it was acquired by Stan Lord in late 1953. Lord later sold his interest in the paper to his nephew, Colin Lord. The ''Armidale Express'' is a newspaper published in Armidale, a city in the Northern Tablelands, New South Wales. Its frequency is tri-weekly. The Express is read by more than 10,000 readers in Armidale, Uralla, Guyra and Walcha areas.
