Alexander Graham (Lord Mayor)
Sir Alexander Michael Graham Order of the British Empire, GBE (born 27 September 1938) is a former Lord Mayor of London. He served from 1990 to 1991. Graham has also served as an Court of Aldermen, alderman and as Sheriff of the City of London. From 2000 to 2013, he served as Gentleman Usher of the Purple Rod. He went to St. Paul's School London from 1951 to 1956 Before assuming the office of Lord Mayor, he was made Order of the British Empire, Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) with effect from 9 October 1990. He is married to Lady Carolyn Graham and they have three daughters. His brother is Lieutenant General Peter Graham (British Army officer), Sir Peter Graham, a former General Officer Commanding Scotland. Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. Recommendations for appointments to the Order of the British Empire were originally made on the nomination of the United Kingdom, the self-governing Dominions of the Empire (later Commonwealth) and the Viceroy of India. The Lord Mayor of London is the mayor of the City of London and the leader of the City of London Corporation. Within the City, the Lord Mayor is accorded precedence over all individuals except the sovereign and retains various traditional powers, rights, and privileges, including the title and style ''The Right Honourable Lord Mayor of London''. Court Of Aldermen
The Court of Aldermen forms part of the senior governance of the City of London Corporation. It comprises twenty-five aldermen of the City of London, presided over by the Lord Mayor (becoming senior alderman during his year of office). The Court was originally responsible for the entire administration of the City, but most of its responsibilities were subsumed by the Court of Common Council in the fourteenth century. The Court of Aldermen meets nine times a year in the Aldermen's Court Room at Guildhall. The few remaining duties of the Court include approving people for Freedom of the City and approving the formation of new livery companies, appointing the Recorder of London and acting as the Verderers of Epping Forest. Two sheriffs are elected annually for the City of London by the Liverymen of the City livery companies. Today's sheriffs have only nominal duties, but the historical officeholders had important judicial responsibilities. They have attended the justices at the Central Criminal Court, Old Bailey, since its original role as the court for the City and Middlesex. The sheriffs live in the Central Criminal Court, Old Bailey, during their year of service, so that one of them can always be attendant on the judges. The Gentleman Usher of the Purple Rod, or Lady Usher of the Purple Rod when appropriate, is the Usher to the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, established in 1917 and effective since . Lieutenant General Sir Peter Walter Graham (born 14 March 1937) was General Officer Commanding Scotland. History Early history Great Britain was divided into military districts on the outbreak of war with France in 1793. The Scottish District was commanded by the Commander-in-Chief, Scotland. Hugh Bidwell
Sir Hugh Charles Philip Bidwell (1 November 1934 – 7 December 2013) was a British businessman and the 662nd Lord Mayor of London in 1989–90. Prior to his election as mayor Bidwell was an alderman of the Billingsgate ward from 1979 to 1996, and a sheriff of the City of London in 1986. Bidwell was appointed a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) on his election as mayor. Bidwell was born in 1934, the son of a wine importer, and was schooled at Stonyhurst. Undergoing National Service in the East Surrey Regiment in 1953, he served in Nyasaland, Kenya with the 1st Btn King's African Rifles. Bidwell began working in the food industry with the breakfast cereal maker Viota, and became a director of Viota in 1962. Bidwell was subsequently chairman of the food company Pearce Duff, headed the food arm of Gill & Duffus, and joined Allied Lyons in 1985. Sir Brian Garton Jenkins KStJ (born 3 December 1935) is a retired English chartered accountant and businessman who was President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales in 1985/86, Lord Mayor of the City of London in 1991/92, and Chairman of Woolwich plc 1995/2000.
