Alexander Funeral Home
The Alexander Funeral Home is the oldest African American owned business in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Alexander Funeral Home was founded by Zechariah Alexander in 1914 when Alexander bought half of Coles and Smith Undertakes. In 1927 Alexander purchased the remaining part of the business and changed the name to the Alexander Funeral Home. The business passed through the family with Kelly Alexander Sr and Zechariah Alexander Jr both making careers out of the business. The funeral home became a sort of gathering place for civil rights activists and leaders in the community. Mecklenburg County is a county located in the southwestern region of the state of North Carolina, in the United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 1,115,482, making it the second-most populous county in North Carolina (after Wake County) and the first county in the Carolinas to surpass one million in population. Kelly Alexander Sr
Kelly Miller Alexander Sr. (August 18, 1915 – April 2, 1985) was chairman of the board of directors of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and a civil rights activist. He was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, to Zechariah and Louise Alexander. His father was the owner of the Alexander Funeral Home, the only black funeral home in Charlotte. He played football at Second Ward High School, becoming known as "Ship-wreck Kelly." Alexander studied at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and Renouard College of Embalming in New York City before returning to Charlotte to help run his father's business. His activism in the NAACP began in 1938 when he joined the Charlotte branch of the NAACP. In 1940 he took over leadership of the Charlotte branch, turning it into a powerful civil rights force within the city. Frederick D Alexander
Frederick Douglas Alexander (February 21, 1910 – April 13, 1980) was an American businessman, civil rights activist, and politician from Charlotte, North Carolina. Elected to the Charlotte City Council in 1965, he was the first African American to serve on it since the 1890s. He was repeatedly re-elected, serving until 1974. That year he was elected to the State Senate, serving into 1980. He was also active in local business, community and civil rights organizations, establishing a reputation as a moderate. The state of North Carolina had passed measures at the turn of the 20th century to raise barriers to voter registration, and excluded African Americans for decades from the political system. National Association For The Advancement Of Colored People
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is a civil rights organization in the United States, formed in 1909 as an interracial endeavor to advance justice for African Americans by a group including W. E. B. Du Bois, Mary White Ovington, Moorfield Storey and Ida B. Wells. Leaders of the organization included Thurgood Marshall and Roy Wilkins. Its mission in the 21st century is "to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination". National NAACP initiatives include political lobbying, publicity efforts and litigation strategies developed by its legal team. Kelly Alexander
Kelly M. Alexander Jr. (born October 17, 1948) is a Democratic member of the North Carolina House of Representatives. He represents the 107th district. During the 2015 legislative session, Alexander is one of 22 African Americans in the North Carolina House of Representatives. Alexander is the son of NAACP chair Kelly Alexander Sr. and nephew of civil rights activist Frederick Alexander. He attended West Charlotte High School and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Alexander returned to Charlotte after college to manage the Alexander Funeral Home.
