Alexander Fraser (Victorian Politician)
Alexander Fraser (2 January 1802 – 20 August 1888) was a businessman and politician in colonial Victoria (Australia), a member of the Victorian Legislative Council. Fraser was born in Aldourie, Inverness-shire, Scotland, eldest of the ten children of John Fraser, a farmer and Free Church elder, and his wife Ann, ''née'' Fraser. In 1827 Fraser went to London and five years later sailed for Sydney, New South Wales, in the ''Rubicon''. The ship, however, put in at Hobart, Tasmania (then called Van Diemen's Land), and he decided to stay there, which he did till 1852, when he visited Victoria and decided to settle there. Fraser had been interested in pastoral properties in the colony as far back as 1836, and he now started as an auctioneer in Bendigo, removing the business to Melbourne in 1853. Victorian Legislative Council
The Victorian Legislative Council (VLC) is the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria, Australia, the lower house being the Legislative Assembly. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The Legislative Council serves as a house of review, in a similar fashion to its federal counterpart, the Australian Senate. Although, it is possible for legislation to be first introduced in the Council, most bills receive their first hearing in the Legislative Assembly. The presiding officer of the chamber is the President of the Legislative Council. The Council presently comprises 40 members serving four-year terms from eight electoral regions each with five members. Van Diemen's Land
Van Diemen's Land was the colonial name of the island of Tasmania used by the British during the European exploration of Australia in the 19th century. A British settlement was established in Van Diemen's Land in 1803 before it became a separate colony in 1825. Its penal colonies became notorious destinations for the transportation of convicts due to the harsh environment, isolation and reputation for being inescapable. Macquarie Harbour and Port Arthur are among the most well-known penal settlements on the island. With the passing of the Australian Constitutions Act 1850, Van Diemen's Land (along with New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, and Western Australia) was granted responsible self-government with its own elected representative and parliament.
