Alexander Elphinstone, 2nd Lord Elphinstone
Alexander Elphinstone, 2nd Lord Elphinstone (1511-1547) was a Scottish landowner. Alexander Elphinstone was the son of Alexander Elphinstone, 1st Lord Elphinstone, and Elizabeth Barlow, an English gentlewoman in the household of Margaret Tudor. Alexander became Lord Elphinstone after the death of his father at the Battle of Flodden in September 1513. Lord Elphinstone died from wounds received at the Battle of Pinkie in September 1547. Family Alexander Elphinstone married Katharine Erskine, daughter of John Erskine, 5th Lord Erskine, by his wife Lady Margaret Campbell, daughter of Archibald Campbell, 2nd Earl of Argyll and Elizabeth Stewart. Robert Drummond Of Carnock
Sir Robert Drummond of Carnock (died 1592) was Master of Work to the Crown of Scotland from 1579 to 1583. This was the responsibility for building and repair of palaces and castles. His appointment was made to be "as Sir James Hamilton of Finnart had it." Life Robert Drummond was the eldest son of Alexander Drummond, of Carnock and Arnmore (Ernmore), and Marjory Bruce of Auchinbowie. Arnmore is a location at Kippen, Stirlingshire, neighbouring Broich, the home of William Schaw, his successor as Master of Work who is regarded as a founder of Freemasonry. Alexander Drummond had been a supporter of the Earl of Angus and went with him to exile to England in 1529. Carnock, the location, is to the east of Stirling. Robert built up the Carnock lands into a holding recognised as a free barony. Robert's first wife, Agnes (or Margaret), was a sister of Sir William Kirkcaldy of Grange. Plean Tower, also known as Cock-a-bendy Castle, Mengie Castle, Menzies Castle and Plane Castle, is located around from Plean, in Stirling, central Scotland. Alexander Elphinstone, 1st Lord Elphinstone (died 9 September 1513) was a Scottish peer. He was the son of Sir John Elphinstone of that ilk and of Pittendreich. He was first known as "Alexander Elphinstone of Innernochty". He was made Baillie of Stirlingshire in January 1508, in succession to Andrew Aytoun. He made a Lord of Parliament at the baptism of Prince Arthur, a son of James IV and Margaret Tudor in 1509. He was raised to the Peerage of Scotland as Lord Elphinstone, of Elphinstone in the County of Stirling, in 1510. This was a new creation. On the lands of the new barony of Elphinstone a new tower was erected called the tower of Elphinstone, which became the principal messuage of the new barony. It formed the chief residence of the Lords Elphinstone for eight generations of the family down to, and including Charles the ninth Lord. Robert Elphinstone, 3rd Lord Elphinstone (1530-1602) was a Scottish landowner and courtier. Robert Elphinstone was the son of Alexander Elphinstone, 2nd Lord Elphinstone and Katherine Erskine, daughter of John Erskine, 5th Lord Erskine and his wife Lady Margaret Campbell, daughter of Archibald Campbell, 2nd Earl of Argyll and Elizabeth Stewart. His great-aunt Euphemia Elphinstone was a mistress of James V of Scotland and the mother of Robert, Earl of Orkney. The Elphinstone lands were to the east of Stirling near Airth and the Forth, centered on Elphinstone Tower. His sister Margery Elphinstone married his neighbour Robert Drummond of Carnock in the 1540s. Their coat of arms from Carnock House was obtained by Harold Nicolson and Vita Sackville-West had it displayed at Sissinghurst Castle.
