Alexander Brown FRSE FRSSAf (1878–1947) was a Scottish-born mathematician and educator in South Africa. He contributed to the study of the ratio of incommensurables in geometry and relations between the distances of a point from three vertices of a regular polygon. Career Brown was born in Dalkeith, near Edinburgh, Scotland on 5 May 1878. He attended Newton Public School and then George Watson's College, where he was the winner of the Wright Bursary in his final year. He matriculated at the University of Edinburgh in 1893 where he obtained a MA (Mathematics and Natural Science)(''First Class'') and a BSc (Mathematics and Natural Science)(''Special Distinction'') in 1897. While at Edinburgh University he held the first Heriot Bursary and Mackay Smith scholarship. Alex Browne (born 9 August 1992) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Browne played for the Oakleigh Chargers in the TAC Cup. He was drafted by Essendon with pick 48 in the 2010 national draft and made his debut against at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in round 11 of the 2011 AFL season. He was delisted in October 2015. His father, Murray Browne, played for and in the 1980s and his mother was a cheerleader for . Browne, along with 33 other Essendon players, was found guilty of using a banned performance-enhancing substance, thymosin beta-4, as part of Essendon's sports supplements program during the 2012 season. Alexander Kellock Brown
Alexander Kellock Brown (11 February 1849 – 9 May 1922) was a Scottish painter of landscapes and brother of the sculptor William Kellock Brown. He painted in oils and water-colors and exhibited frequently at the Royal Scottish Academy exhibits between 1871 and 1922. History Brown received his first drawing lessons in the Free Church Normal School, Cowcaddens. He took night classes at the Glasgow Art School taught by Robert Greenlees. Brown was an apprentice in the designing department of Inglis and Wakefield, calico printers, for seven years. Later, Brown studied at the Heatherly School in London. Alexander Crum Brown FRSE FRS (26 March 1838 – 28 October 1922) was a Scottish organic chemist. Alexander Crum Brown Road in Edinburgh's King's Buildings complex is named after him. Early life and education Crum Brown was born at 4 Bellevue Terrace in Edinburgh. His mother, Margaret Fisher Crum (d.1841), was the sister of the chemist Walter Crum, and his father, Rev Dr John Brown (1784-1858), was minister of Broughton Place Church in the east end of Edinburgh's New Town. His half brother was the physician and essayist John Brown. For five years he studied at the Royal High School, then for one year at Mill Hill School in London. Alexander White Brown (21 December 1877 – 6 March 1944) was a Scottish footballer. Career Brown was a prolific scorer in Scottish youth football, and earned his nickname as the "Glenbuck Goalgetter" as a 16-year-old playing for Glenbuck Athletic. Turning professional with St Bernard's two years later, he was soon induced across the border to English football with Preston North End. After three years, his career continued with Portsmouth, then Tottenham Hotspur. During the 1900–01 season, Brown scored 15 goals during Tottenham's FA Cup run, including a goal in every round, which resulted in the club becoming the only non-League team to win the Cup. Brown scored both of Tottenham's goals in the first Final against Sheffield United, a 2–2 draw; in the replayed match he scored another as Spurs beat United 3–1 to win the Cup. Alexander Garnet Brown
Alexander Garnet Brown (May 2, 1930 – January 7, 2010) was a Canadian businessman and politician who served in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1969 to 1978. He represented the electoral district of Halifax Eastern Shore as a Liberal. Brown was an athlete in his youth, and was signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers, playing in their farm system for two years. In the 1950s, Brown and his father founded Atlantic Canada's largest food brokerage, A.G. Brown and Sons Ltd. He was also co-founder of Halifax Cablevision, and a founder and director of Dartmouth Cable Television. First elected in a by-election on July 8, 1969, Brown was re-elected in 1970 and 1974.
